AMD suffers Q4 loss: A rough end to a rough year

really don't see why they don't try to make one CPU that will compete with Intel... or even make it fun for overclocking for a while like the 1055T. if that happened... then maybe they would be back on a decent profit track.

If only it were that simple.

I joke around about AMD's shortcomings all the time, but I don't think anyone wants them off the map. I really hope they can pull something out the bag.

They REALLY need the next consoles to come out, seeing as they seem to be supplying both sides (or so I have read).

consoles will help, but the gpu side of the company is doing pretty well they just need to get there cpu section up to standard to compete with intel. Need to do something like a cheaper version of an ultrabook with a amd apu and then they would do better because the ultrabooks sell well because people trust them and look amazing if amd can undercut the high prices for some ultrabooks then they could steal that market back from intel

You do know that AMD are making the cpu's for the consoles right(unless all the leaks are totally bogus)?that is what I was referring to anyway.

Oh from what i had heard from the leaks they were making the gpu's I didn't know about the cpu's but even so they will make very little margin on the consoles compared to a computer

Consoles do not sell nearly as much as PC parts would, although it would help..

It depends on what they use for the consoles, and the amount of feasible income they will gain from it...

Remember, it is supposed to be next gen, which means using more money.

I hate reading news like that. If this company goes under, Intel will have no one to contend with (even though AMD has stated that it has no intention of trying to go toe-to-toe with Intel). There would no longer be a need to continue driving products forward like they are, and the public would be getting charged unnecessary prices for products that, like Encom OS12 (Tron reference), has nothing more than a "12" slapped on the box as the extent of the changes.

If amd fails intel has only ARM to drive out, now in the pc market intel will own all, but in tablets and phones etc. ARM is currently winning. Last i read anyway?

they have shot themselves in the foot by focusing on consoles and smartphones etc when intel continued focusing on pcs , they are dropping the quality by focusing on price and quantity thats why they cant compete with intel

i do agree though i wouldn't want to see intel with no competition market domination will cause stagnation , and in the pc industry thats the last thing we want

I wouldn't like seeing AMD going down. I personally don't use their products but they make nice bang for the buck hardware (especially GPU's). Really hate their advertising department though.

However, if AMD went down Intel would be pretty much the only one on the market and they can make the prices as high as they want. On the other side that would be a bad move as the PC market is dying for the regular consumer now that people have tablets and smartphones and (think that) they don't need a computer anymore...

just hope amd get gid of am3+ socket and pull something out of there backside thats whats let them down holding on to a old socket design

Wait. AMD make smartphones?

I think that AMD are shooting themselves in the foot because they are retreating towards their APUs, which seem to be at the forefront of the HTPC market, and therefore retreating away from the likes of the 3570k because at this moment in time they are losing quite badly on that battlefield.

The problem is that if Haswell is anything to go by Intel are gunning for AMD, which is evidenced by their constant bellowing about the improvements to the IGP, obviously designed to destroy the APU along with AMD in the lower end of the market.

AMD need to stop running and start fighting where it counts, otherwise Intel are just going to pursue them relentlessly until AMD are left producing APUs for netbooks, and last time I checked the only netbook released in the last 3 months or so was a goddamn Acer Aspire.

The other issue AMD is faced with is resources: money aside, Intel has them, and AMD doesn't. A stronger work force, better manufacturing facilities, better selection of global partners... AMD just doesn't have it like that. Kudos to Intel for cementing themselves so well into this industry, but AMD can't fail. Now what WOULD be good is if the performance of their APUs became such that their other stand-alone processors wound up not needing to exist anymore, or that once they can incorporate a die shrink that they can still HAVE 6+ core processors that also run integrated graphics... again, this is something that they simply do not have the resources to manage just yet, but I see that happening at some point in time since that would set them on better footing to offer a product that could better compete alongside Intel at the lower end of the spectrum. Leave the iGPU-less processing for the likes of their Opteron line for business servers and the like. This way, a user could ALSO take better advantage of software solution like Lucid Logix Virtu, which could potentially net better overall system performance AND reduce power consumption, something that is desperately needed by AMD on account of people living in countries where their products are sold that charge a chip of your soul and your first-born a month for electricity.

Umm false... Ps3 has sold 63million+ consoles. The xbox has sold over 62million+ , i highly doubt any gpu has sold even 5million(haven't checked much.)

Not trying to be a know it all but ya i'm pretty sure consoles make a lot more profit, only advantage a pc gpu would have is that they make more profit per gpu i would assume, yet still not enough.

Hopefully AMD will pull out of this just like they have many times. People were writing them off when they first got in the business and they have been written off half a dozen times at least since then.
