AMD or Intel Custom Build

I would like people's opinion on what parts I should be buying for my machine, this is not the final parts so any help would be much appreciated.

AMD PC Rig

Case: NZXT Phantom 410

Motherboard: Asus M5A99X EVO 990X Socket AM3+

CPU: AMD Bulldozer FX-8 8150 8 Core (3.6GHz, 8MB)

CPU Cooler: Corsair Memory Hydro Series H100

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR3 1600MHz

Graphics Card: XFX ATI Radeon 6970 HD 880MHz 2GB

Intel PC Rig

Case: NZXT Phantom 410

Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-V PRO Z77 Socket 1155

CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K 3.4GHz Socket 1155

CPU Cooler: Corsair Memory Hydro Series H100

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR3 1600MHz

Graphics Card: Asus GTX560 Ti GDDR5 1GB SLI (I already own one.)

Even though the AMD is cheaper is it worth the Intel Rig?

intel rig all the way. youll get better performance and upgradeable to ivy bridge if you need it. 560ti in sli is about gtx 580 performance so itll beat the amd rig there to

Agreed with the above, would definitely go with the Intel rig, much better performance, but it would be worth waiting to see what ivy bridge brings before buying the CPU. Looks a good build

Intel FTW... I was an AMD fan for some time before I started to really know something... Changed to intel and performance is wayyyy better...

INTEL as well.

You dont mention a PSU in those specs. just be warned you'll need a decent psu for the sli of the 560's 750 should work but 850 would be alot more efficient.

Never tried AMD myself but looking a various reviews Intel have no competition as such, when i used to lurk on the forums here and always wanted to build my own i just researched what i wanted and used a psu calculater then went nuts and over did it...S_I_N has his head more screwed on more than me in that department.

look at your budget and source prices and when buying more than one piece of hardware try and get it shipped together to save a few bob, i have used pixmania in the past and they do have discount codes on the bottom of their pages...some advice will depend on what you want to use your pc mostly for...more than likely gaming is high on the agenda...

Is this just for gaming? If so then drop the 2600k and get a 2500k and you will only need 8gb of ram. But I would suggest the Intel build too.

I agree. The Intel rig would be a better option and cost less as well with the 2500K/Ivy Bridge equivalent. I am still a AMD fan (I always like the underdog) but i have to go with what performs better. You will not regret choosing the Intel build over the AMD. Also MORE RAM=MORE BETTER!! lol

Lol don't start that again. I can't wait til I get my next pc built so I can RamDisk the shizzle out of it. You know you're a geek when you can say that you don't need to watch a video on RamDisk because you've already seen it!

lols. I agree but alot of people have never seen it and with ram prices dropping its soooooo worth it.

It's a shame AMD have been unable to compete with Intel the past few years. I remember building lots of AMD rigs back in the day. The Pentium 4 just couldn't beat AMD's processors. 3200+ 3500+ 3800+

AMD were so innovative back then, they released AMD64 (their 64-bit instruction for x86) way before Intel had any idea what was going on. This was in 2003 if I remember correctly. Intel were still offering 32-bit processors in the Core Duo range right up until Core 2 Duo launched in 2006! - They did produce a few 64-bit Pentium 4's in 2004 but they were lacklustre and it wasn't until around late 2005 that their Mobile CPU's got the same treatment.

Now the market has completely reversed. Intel is innovating adding things like hardware AES to their CPU's integrating the GPU with the CPU. Adding in PCIe controllers to the processors giving consumers 6 and then 8 DIMM slots with X58 and now X79. AMD still pushing just 4 slots even on their very high end. Some might argue consumers don't need more than 4 DIMM slots, but I would argue AMD needs to deliver on that just to show they can offer a competitive product to Intel. When I look at any of AMD's stuff I don't see a competitor to X79 anywhere I see a competitor to the 2500K on LGA 1155 at best and even then you'd need their fastest processor which has more cores than a 2500K just to match a 2500K's stock performance. And that's before we even get in to the overclocking potential of a 2500K which as we all know is incredible.

I really hope that AMD's next architecture blows Intel out of the water but I just don't see it happening. No mater how much I want them to succeed they've struggled the last 6 years. Not just on the technology but financially, they've spun off their manufacturing arm in to a new company called Global Foundries - A company that has also found it hard to compete with the likes of TSMC and Intel.

The first self build I ever did was AMD and I've owned quite a lot of AMD rigs over the last decade. Their stuff holds a special place in my heart and I just wish they'd fight back and be the company they once were, a world where Intel dictates the high end features and prices is not good. It needs to be closer to how NVIDIA and AMD compete in Graphics so that a healthy competition can exist which is better for us, the consumers.

Yeah I would definitely go with Intel. Like Vicey said, AMD Really don't have that exceeding edge that Intel do, nowadays. So In the long run it'll do you better.

I had an Athlon 64 FX57 [linkie], and it killed anything intel at the time. I look at the 3930k, it kills virtually everything (except 3960X). I used to be AMD, now I'm Intel, nothing personal, just following performance.

Another Intel 100%

Currently AMD can't beat Intel as you can read from the reviews everywhere. You wont be regret going to i7-2600k.
