Hello people just after some advice as if there is another better option out there.

as of late (a year or two) i have been busy with work so not been able to spend so much time playing games and using the computer but my old GPU has just started playing up. I dont think its an issue with the card its self but more of a driver issue which ive had quite a bit since i had it but instead of messing around keep installing the drivers again i feel the need to upgrade it so i can play some more up to date games like GTA, dirt rally etc etc

at the moment i have an old AMD HD6850 which was ment to be a stop gap between getting something better so im quite happy with the length of time it has worked for.

at the moment i play Farming Simulator 15 with my brothers little boy and that mainly it due to the limits with the card and a limited amount of time to play. also using a 1920 x 1080P res

other hardware at the moment is

Motherboard: - Gigabyte Z68X-UD5-B3
CPU: - Intel Core i5 2500K
SSD: - 120gb Kingston Hyper X
PSU:- 600 watt Corsair RM

At 1080p the GTX 970 is a great card, the AMD 390 is the same price range £250. Both cards will give you a shock at how well they work over your HD6850. To be honest, if your looking at spending that sort of money on a GPU, you can't really go wrong with either.

Yeah man, go for the 970 if you can afford it. It's an absolutely killer card at 1080p and not too shabby at 1440p either.

I think there was some issues with the 970 and GTA even at 1080p. Though they might have fixed it.

Unfortunately I am not at home to test it at the moment, so hopefully someone with a 970 setup can confirm if it is fixed.

In my experience, GTA V has a fair number of problems with a lot of cards. My 380 gets 50-60 fps at around medium settings, but there's actually quite a lot of stuttering and I don't think I'm the only one with problems with GTA. When it comes to GTA V, I probably wouldn't blame the card.

I play a lot of GTA V on a 970 at both 1080 and 1440. In fact you can check my thread about moving to 1440 to see benchmarks in GTA V at almost maximum settings.
GTA V does have a few random issues with most cards, the worst I have found is the Vsync issue that suddenly starts to jump between full and half Vsync. However this is easily rectified by either disabling Vsync full time, or by changing the Vsync setting in game and then back. Then no more issues while playing in that session.

thanks for the information guys :)

would you say the GTX 970 is the better option over the 390?

They are pretty damn close in performance. It comes down to the games you play more than anything. Although the 8GB of vram on the 390 is a really nice buffer for games who just eat all the vram they can get which is becoming more common these days. In the States I can get 390s much cheaper than a 970 so if you lived here, that would be an easy choice. Don't know what it's like anywhere else though.

If you play more Nvidia optimised titles then the 970, If AMD optimised then 390. To be honest, at 1080, either is a good buy. Personally i chose the 970, but thats my preference to Nvidia.
