Greetings.

So my rig is in the process of upgrading (May/June upgrade).

I currently have a TX750m PSU which is going to be going into a new build for my old man. He probably wont need a 750w BUT i dont want to keep it becouse its got a annoying very high pitch coil whine which whilst i can hear it, he cant hear it so its all good

Anyway iv got a OC'd 3930k which is a glutonous pig for power 250w-300w according to AIDA64.
Im also planing on getting a GTX 780, and maybe even SLI in the future. Along with some other goodies like a dedicated Soundcard , new mouse etc. Also when it comes time OC my CPU further to keep up with 'time' ill be going into a full custom water loop, but thats 3 or so years down the road.

So. A slight Wattage boost is in order.

Im going to the 850w region, but since i cant stand coil whine now that im running a quiet computer it needs to be high quality.

So far my choices are between a Corsair model and 2 Seasonic Models (want full modular, Corsair HX series seems semi modular). Im aware seasonic is, from my knowledge atleast, the OEM for Corsair ..so.

To all you PSU enthusiats.. what should i get.

Corsair AX860 860W '80 Plus Platinum' Full Modular Power Supply (~£165)
Seasonic SS-860XP 860w '80 Plus Platinum' Full Modular Power Supply (~£181)
Seasonic X-Series SS-850KM-F3 850w '80 Plus Gold' Full Modular Power Supply (~£171)

or some other one ?

Cheers.

AX860 has my vote. It's the cheapest you've listed and a rock solid PSU. Although the HX850 is only semi-modular, the only anchored cables are the 24 pin, 8 pin and the GPU 6+2 pin cables, which you're going to be using anyway. So theres no reason to not consider that too.

The AX860 is slightly better, not only does it have the link option but its a flextronics oem

its also worth noting long term you can get the cable upgrade kits with the Corsairs and 7 year warranty

AX860i would be a great one. I love the i series of power supplies. Seasonic Platinum line always get rave reviews with some sites saying they're the best ever.

XFX is also a great brand so can't go wrong with any of their PSU's. Those are my 3 "go to" brands and don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

I've asked on other forums about this and some have said that Corsair and Seasonic units like the ones i sugested have issues with coil whine. I looked it up and there does see mto be a high occurance of coil whine.

One PSU i did look at but dismissed due to it not being fully modular is the NZXT Hale series, iv learned they have a new Hale90 V2 series out that is fully modular and doesnt have issues with coil whine.
It also looks soooo nice in white. Unfortunatly i cant find it anywhere in the UK...any1 know any dates they will be here ..and if i should consider getting one ?

Update.

After thinking about it, and after the release of the GTX 780, iv decided that since im planing on going SLI with 780's (one soon and a second within a year) i think a 860w wont be enough. At 250w per 780 and my CPU which can get between 250 and 300w at max load, im gunna need at minimum 800w, doesnt leave much wiggle room so im gunna go to 1000w.

the 1000w choice im leaning towards atm is the Seasonic Platinum 1000w, seems to have good reviews for performance, and silence. The odd post here and there about coil whine but most reviews that check for it have not found any so fingers x'd :)
The Corsair Ax1200i is just to much do i wont be goign for that, the NZXt Hale 90v2 1000w is a nice looker but fan noise seems to be a thing that gets picked up in reviews. and ofc the fact it isnt out yet in the UK.

ill be ordering one within a couple weks, when ever i pull the trigger on a GTX 780.

850 will still be enough. A pair of GTX680's will draw less than 575 watts at the wall which would be even less draw from the power supply so a 650 would run a pair of GTX680's. Now say a GTX780 draws 75 more watts than a 680 (total system draw) and you add a 2nd one, youre up to 725 total system draw at the wall which assuming 75% efficiency would be 543 watts drawn from the power supply (unless my math is wrong which it usually is). Round that up even more to say 600 watts and a 850 will still fit the bill. And thats extreme, peak loads. Remember, those power consumption numbers youre seeing are at the socket and not actual loads drawn from the power supply.

Now there is certainly nothing wrong with getting the 1000 watt power supply and that Seasonic Platinum is about the best there is but just know that youre paying for a LOT of watts that you wont need or use. On the plus side, the fan would never spin up because youd probably never draw half what that 1000 watt unit can dish out. So youd get cooler temps from it.
