No for software, they won't direct you on to a free solution if they have a paid one will they?

Depends on the free solution itself perhaps?... Or what if you go "I already got that paid one, so why should I get twice?..."
If you already got the paid one, merging PDF's wouldn't be the an issue. The software does that...

Still phone calls can fix it... an Adobe program usually contains more features than one man knows of lol, so a phone call or support can fix that, by saying "that feature does exist and here's a guide on how to do it"
Or that magical google-box. Adobe also have a self help thing.

Yeah i don't understand why this functionality is not built into Windows like OS X like you said.
