A Noob and Modding

Hey Guys! So the other day me and Tom were talking about my Antec 1200, and how it majorly need updating. I quite like the Coolermaster Cosmos SE but am not sure what mods to do on it.

I am originally a gamer and the only mods I made on my 1200 were a few holes and cutting the windows to add a massive bit of acrylic, so I'm still a massive noob.

That said I am looking to you guys for some possible ideas I could add into the Cosmos SE. So if you know of any simple but effective things, or some mentally crazy mods please let me know.

I would be transferring my current components into the SE which consists of the following:

Intel i7 950 CPU
Asus Sabertooth X58 Mobo
MSI GTX 660Ti Power Edition GPU
Noctua U12P SE2 Cooler
Corsair Vengeance RAM
Western Digital 1TB Black HDD
Corsair HX850W PSU
Asus Xonar DG Sound card

Corsair AF120 Performance Fans (On Noise reducing adapters)
NZXT Blue 1M Led Kit

I'm losing the optical drives so that will be another thing that won't take up space, along with the fan controller.

Thank you all for your help :D

I think it would help if you had some sort of goal you wanted to complete? Like mod it so you can watercool or different window? Remove the optical drive?

Iirc you could fit an h100i in the roof if you plan on doing that.

This ^^

You say you're planning on moving your current components over to a new case, then talk about modding the 1200(?)

Modding is about improving aesthetics and functionality. Considering you've got an air cooler there's probably little you can do to improve functionality. Equally, I'm not too sure on the point of a new case when it seems the sole reason for buying it would be to mod it(?)

Doesn't seem very well thought through so far to be honest.

Maybe think about upgrading the system a little so you're actually in a position to mod the case so it becomes more functional - ie, front radiator support or something.

If you want something small, some kind of PSU cover may be a good start?

Ok so I'm mainly thinking just keeping it clean and tidy. I'm not changing any parts, just moving cases. I currently have two optical drives that I'm taking out to keep the front of the case clean.

Some pics to get us rolling would be nice :)

I have a rig gallery here that has lots of pictures of the current rig if that's any good.

Then i see no need to mod if with the current hardware in your rig. Should all look very nice and tidy if cable management is dont well:)

I'm still not sure if I understood or not, you want to mod a case that you will not use? as you're moving to another case.

Ok folks, I've rewritten the first post so now it hopefully makes sense. I'm looking for modding ideas for the Cosmos SE.

So the other day I was talking to Tom about my Antec 1200 and how it majorly need replacing. I quite like the Coolermaster Cosmos SE a a basis for a new build but Tom has suggested that I should ask you guys for some advise on the possibility of modding it to make it more unique.

Tom has said he is willing to give the the SE that is here but I need to come up with a plan on what I would like to do to it. TTL did say it needs to be a higher quality build than I did in my 1200 and that some simple customising to make it my own may help me get a insight into all this modding lark.

Please keep in mind Im just a build it and use it gamer so I had only made some cable management holes TJ Harlow style and fitted a window. I think the guv would probably call me a n0000b at this point!

Ill will not be reusing the optical drives, Im told its actually a requirement now if I want to try and get a full time job with Tom!.

Thank you all for your help and please be gentle!

Your original post made my teeth itch so Ive rewritten it.

Remember I said to you that posting on the forums will help if you ever get to do anything for the front page of the site. So at least while you are trying to show me your are capable a lot more effort needs to be put in.

Also all your post basically said to me was I have no idea what Im meant to do. You should of had a basic plan and asked for advise like I told you when you were here.

There are LOADS of build logs and advise threads on the forum, you could have used any number of them as a reference tool. You should have at least come up with some of your own ideas, maybe some images, even some basic sketches on what you could do even?

I personally think you just rushed this and you did it because I suggested it as a learning tool, it doesnt feel like your heart is in it.

*For all the members here Ive been discussing taking J on full time so he can leave his current part time job. My issue is I need J to be at a standard in keeping with the other staff members on the site and be able to keep himself busy creating a varied amount of regular and interesting content for you all.

What you are seeing here is basically me playing teacher, putting red lines under his mistakes and leaving him a little note at the bottom of his homework telling him not to do it on the bus on the way to school.

Youll notice J that I seem to have managed more text in my reply than you have throughout the whole thread.

So RKJ do you have any updates for us? Any ideas or drawings?

Hey, I'm currently making a modding scrapbook of ideas from other rigs that I like. I do like the idea of a PSU cover though, maybe something acrylic.

Maybe changing the front panel led colour too? I'm into electronics so something that I can get the soldering iron out on sounds interesting.

I suppose the biggest issue we have here really is the mix of colours that are in your rig already, i.e. the brown of the Sabertooth, black and blue of the 660Ti and then whatever colour the vengeance would be.

I will be the first to say though that I am no modder by any stretch of the imagination. I have always just put together a PC that is good enough to do the job and doesn't have to be aesthetically pleasing since that has never really been a concern to me. Benching is more my thing so the numbers I get from the system are more important than how pretty it looks :P

Tbh for me it comes down to what you want the rig to say about you... is it about performance? style? flash? do you want to just build something that is tidy and clean or something thats challenged you and show cased your skills?

are you painting any of it?

At the moment the rigs that a really inspiring me are the ones using straight tubing hiding as much as possible.

On the plus side, at least RKJ knows how to use apostrophes (;

You could go for a really cool paint job. I can't offer any advice, but some of the most creative builds I've seen are using custom paintwork, and it can look really sleek if you are creative.

Sorry I had to do that.:p

Yeah I had no sense about colour matching back then, only when I added the AF fans I started to think about it. I could always replace or paint the Noctua's.

I think mainly performance and keeping it clean, maybe somewhere to hide the hard drive could be good. I may paint the Noctua fan surround to make the colours merge better.

yeh 1st thing im doing on my new build is painting the noctua fans i have (who in there right mind thought brown and cream was a good choice lol)

If your focusing on performance then id defiantly go for clean as you want the performance/hardware to do the talking (thats just me) and should show where you have spent the most time and effort.
