A little out of date

Hello all,

I haven't really been paying attention to the latest and greatest graphic cards since January so I'm a little out of touch lol

I have £150 to spend on a new graphic card my 9800 gx2 is no longer working for some weird reason :/

so what do you lot recommend my current specs are

EVGA 780i mobo

4gb 800mhz ram

62bit win 7

intel q9450

1200w psu

Having a little wonder around it seems that the ATI 5770 and 5750 cards will be most suitable yet I haven't had an ati card for a while so dont really know how good and reliable they are.

Looking around a little more i see the GeForce GTX 260's are at a decent price and in benchmarks it seems to be able to pretty well when benched against my ex-graphic card the 9800 gx2 and the nvidia 280's

opinions anyone?
 
Well if you go for a 260 you'll want the core 216 model. Otherwise your pretty limited atm performance wise for that budget. If you can wait a little longer and save up some more money I would so you could get a 5850 or something close to that.

EDIT: If you save around $300 your choices will broaden greatly. Also I'm not sure how the 465's do but NewEgg already has them for sale and they run around 279 USD which is about 192 your money. Of course I would look around for reviews first.
 
dude i have a 5770, overclocks like a beast and was pretty cheap, about £115 off ebay. been a lifelong nvidia fan but this card is really good, especially as it has directx11 which the 260s don't

but what if i was to bring the

5830 Turbo which has been offered to me for around £170? isit worth the extra bit or

Hi Silentsnake.

The 5830 is a much larger card (given it shares the same PCB as the 5870) and is more power hungry. Also the difference in price (just IMO) is not warranted being that it's not head and shoulders over the 5770.

If you are prepared to spend £170 then I would save for a while longer and get a pair of 5770s. There is a great review here explaining why an I am living proof. Either that, or get one 5770 and see how you go and if you want blistering performance at a later date you can always add another.

The 5830 does not share the same PCB as the 5870 fella. 5850 is what you mean, because they are essentially the same card.
 
In the preview I saw in CustomPC it said that their particular card used the 5870 cooler and board. Mind you, they did also say that manus were free to use their own coolers and so on.

Of course ATI could have rushed that sample out? Not sure :)

I will confess to really wanting a huge card when I got my 280. But I don't miss having to remove it to get to my SATA ports.

Massive pita for alot of people. They should be aware of this during design.

One work around for the user is an extension like cable/bracket.
 
Ok so im going to get the 5770 :)

One last thing is it worth considering overclocked 5770s such as the XFX xxx edition? i couldnt really find any benchmarks comparing the oc version with the normal 5770

The stock clock XFX are nothing but reference cards with an XFX sticker on. That's pretty much it unless you get the one with their poor cooler on.

Vapor X is supposed to be a much better cooling solution apparently.

As for the XXX edition? Erm, let me put this in simple terms (mind my French). HELL NO. All they have done is take a reference card, overclock it and create a bios to lock those settings (and it's a pretty feeble OC too IMO) and then put a different sticker on and charge out the ass for it. All it is is a reference card with a OC bios.

Do yourself a favour and just buy a stock one and OC it yourself to their speeds (I did so once and mine ran fine).
 
Alrighty mate thanks for the quick reply I thought there might of been something different in the way it was cooled or something like that but obviously not lol.

I don't think the vapor-x is worth the extra 20 squid so im just going to get the stock xfx card unless someone disagrees and thinks I should get a different model such as the asus etc

wont be placing an order till Monday so I can still change my mind ;)

fair enough,

so i did some reading up on the Vapor-x and it does seem like its worth the extra bit but now ive come across the Asus Cucore edition which has its own cooling system instead of the reference stock cooling similarly to Sapphires card.

Cucore vs Vapor-x

Asus give 3 years warranty over sapphires 2 years

Asus allows for voltage Tweaks whereas sapphire doesn't

Not forgetting the Asus one is £20 cheaper and is the same price as the stock XFX card... weird

Last thing really is which is best at cooling and which is quieter

This might seem nooby but i notice some places sell the Asus EAH5770 whereas others sell the Asus HD5770 wtf what's the difference lol!

Now a £7 price difference is hardly anything so which is the better card :)
 
From those two the Saphire is better as it has a better cooler matey. Cant see if the Asus has voltage tweak, as if you are overclocking (and changing the cooler) then the Asus would be a better buy. So youll have to decide which one you need more on those two comments.
 
To get good clocks from a 5770 you need Voltage options AMDFTW. With a good cooler and voltage options 950 to 1000 core is possible.

The saph is a good out the box card with a quiet cooler.

The Asus if you want to change the cooler and get some clocking done (if it has VoltageTweak.)

Oops I missed this but it's a case of yeah, what he said. The Asus comes with the poor cooler that's there to save pennies. XFX use it too. XFX do a cheap 5770 for around £120 that has that cooler (non factory non Vaporx) and their reference cooled version runs £125 or so plus the S&H.

So for me it would also be the Sapphire hands down which seems to be what every one else is agreeing to also :)

Who was it that made 'that' app for the 5770 that could be hacked to run on any 5770? Something about changing the ini file?
