£900 build, including a monitor, please help me out

I haven't decided yet :), just didn't change it in the list. My main mindbug now is to pick the graphics and then monitor and then I'll be building all weekend :)

I did build my friend a rig the other week using a 7850. He had the dual fan gigabyte version which I have to say did perform very well. If it's only used on 1 monitor then it will max out basically every game while keeping high up the fps (50+).

As for which one, I'd just say the cheapest dual fan design. Warranty isnt really a factor IMO since every manufacture that offers a dual fan card seems to offer a 2 year warranty.

As for the monitor, after watching shrek and playing battlefield 3, I have to say this is seriously good. Even typing on the forums here, the text is so so clear, and I couldnt actually recommend this enough. It's an absolute steal at £130. The only slight 'issue' if you can really call it that is brightness isnt great while going through DVI. Through HDMI the picture is lovely, but I'm not too sure why this problem occurs. You may want to see if the Dell has the same issue through the DVI port, as Display port is your only alternative if it doesnt work correctly, and that may be fine for you, but HDMI on the iiyama is far more common than display port on the dell.

Do you think it might be a faulty cable or port? Also did you check the serial number? it should be at the back, and B1's do have written at the end.

I read this monitor's review, found it in Russian, here's the link, just put it into google translate.

You see, the fact that you're coming from TV might slightly impare your judgement, because the picture on most of them is absolutely awful and anything is better.

I totally missed out the fact that Dell doesn't have HDMI. ATM I'm considering Asus PA238Q now. Sometimes I really dislike reading in-depth reviews, because they bring up so many issues with anything.

I do have the B1 yes.

I did notice the picture / colour / brightness issues through the DVI yes. But through HDMI it's perfect. I dont think it's a faulty port since I read on another forum something about the LG screen (uses the same IPS panel as this) that hdmi works better than dvi. Thats the only reason I even tried changing it.

I seriously coudnt fault the picture whatsoever through HDMI so maybe the review picked up the issues through DVI?

What what I read the panel on X2377HDS is the same as on XB2374HDS, which has a much better stand (a fairly big advantage for me), but does away with USB, its also £20 more expensive. Reviews here and here. The last one mentions that there is a lot of ghosting, and its not good enough for gaming. Makes me think that with monitors you get what you pay for.

I was thinking of getting a TV as well in the near future (don't have one at all), but I think I'm going to take the Asus PA238Q and use it as a TV as well (connect GPU via DP and TV box via HDMI). I would never use two at the same time anyway.

So advantages over Iiyama X2377HDS: better and quicker panel, a solid stand, HDMI + DP.
over Iiyama X2377HDS: better and quicker panel, HDMI + DP.
over Dell U2312HM: slightly better colours (but slightly worse blacks), HDMI + DP

I dont know really. The reviews that people do are the general reviewers that get hundreds of screens, so obviously compared to a £500 dell screen it probably isnt as good. I think it's far better to just listen to advice from users as to what it's like to live with, rather than what it's like compared to a £500 screen.

Firstly, I have no idea what ghosting even is, and I'm guessing as I havent noticed anything weird while playing games my monitor is fine for it. Also, I have no idea what the review states about the blacks and contrast ratio, as again I dont see any problems with it through HDMI.

For me its between £210 for Asus or £150 for X2377HDS (I do need a good stand) and I think the tech advantages and build quality are totally worth it.

I am in no way trying to say that the one you got is rubbish, I am happy you are happy with your monitor and that it ticks all the boxes for you (no sarcasm, I mean this), its just that I know myself and sometimes I do need to spend a little more to make myself happy :) Incidentally, I got just over £1000 tax return, so thats the money I'm gonna use :) I think I'll be placing an order tomorrow evening :)

Haha, I dont think you are, dont worry. It's far better than the TV i was using, and I sold it to a mate that covered the cost of the monitor anyway so I basically swapped a 3 year old TV for a brand new IPS monitor. I could have spent more if I'd have wanted to, and in my choices it was between this and the Dell, and the XB2374HDS to an extent, although I dislike the non-gloss boarder to that. The stand agreed is a little flimsy....okay....very flimsy... But that doesnt exactly bother me since my desk doesnt move :)

:) It's not a bad deal at all then :)

Atm I'm trying to source the best prices, but it nearly always ends up with scan. A trouble though, both PSUs I wanted are out of stock... so decided to go with Corsair TX750M (£89 on scan) or if it will be available tomorrow, then Be Quiet Straight Power E9 680W (£83 on scan - its over £100 elsewhere). Any other good PSUs out there for roughly the same money?

haha, this is exactly how I ended up with a £1000 build instead of originally intended £900 :) I think it will be an overkill, as PSU wattage calculator gives 684W recommended, but thats with SLI, H100, 7(!) fans, 4 ram sticks, etc.. basically more than I will ever have in the system. I was more looking for suggestions of either a cheaper but still good 750W PSU, or a better quality 650W PSU. One requirement though, I will need 4 6 pin (or 6+2) PCIe connectors, as the XFX card takes 2 of those per card.

Thanks mate, had a look at the PSUs. TX650M has only two PCIe connectors. Between HX650 and TX750M, I think the latter would be a better buy because they are the same price, same certification, and the trade off would be the extra 100W for modularity and extra 2 years warranty. Thanks for suggestions though.

Check out my basket below, its insane

So tempted to order right now!

£15 sounds a lot for postage to me. If you send a message to 'Rawz@Aria' on here, you get free shipping from Aria, which would probably save you a few quid. If not that at least you may be able to get certain things from there a little cheaper and so save on shipping. If you did that, you could get mushkin RAM too ;)

I PM'd Rawz yesterday about that, but haven't had a response yet. Funny thing is that my message wan't saved in my 'send folder'. Some things are a little cheaper at Aria, would be great to get free postage. I am taking a day off work on Friday to build the rig, so need to order things for Friday :) It's not that I cannot wait till the weekend, its just that I'm working on both Sat and Sun :)

Which Mushkin kit are you talking about?

Both the same, just different coloured heatsinks, and they overclock pretty well too. I'd probably ring up if I was you and ask about it if you're in a rush. It's all next day couriers they use as well, so next day shipping for free. Cant really complain about that. Only an idea, as you've already got the list, you'll probably want to just buy from scan anyway, but I tend to favour smaller companies like Aria who go the extra step and give people perks like free postage and stuff

Well, I would love to buy from Aria, actually. I compared prices of every item in my list and the CPU, mb and chassis are 15 quid cheaper than at Scan. But it will only be worth it if I get the free shipping, because otherwise its that takes 8.24 away, and then it's not that good a deal, particularly because I need a specific delivery day. Will be waiting for Rawz's reply, but I'm def placing an order tomorrow eve either way.

Call them up tomorrow. They give you lots of extensions, ie - product advice, after sales etc - pretty sure they all go through to the same guy though haha.

It's in their interest to push the free delivery forward in time dont forget.

If I'll get the free delivery from Aria, that will save me 23 quid altogether, which is awesome. I'm inclined to pm Rawz once again (just in case the message wasn't sent at all), but don't want to be rude..
