780 sli or 980 for 4K

Compo Whore
so i'm at wits end on what to do for my next build on the gpu side of things, so for 4k gaming do i sell my gtx 780 and go for 980 (upgrade to two later on in the build) or get a 2nd 780 (if i can get one cheap enough)

the watercooling side of things will be done first (rads, pumps, cpu block and fittings)
then 1000w psu
then the new mobo, cpu and ram.
I'm leaving the gpu's till last.

so what do you think?

two 780's for 4k up push the build to two 980's (one at a time)

I certainly wouldn't rule out CF 390X's.

Agreed!

You can find(in the US at least unsure of EU/UK) 390x's for about $80-$100+ cheaper than a 980 and the performance difference isn't great. The money you save can easily pay for the waterblocks themselves.

Pretty sure all the 390x cards use a reference PCB outside of the MSI gaming card. So you can find some EK blocks already made but I just checked and there isn't anything for the MSI Gaming one yet from EK.

390x is a slightly faster 290x as the core's tend to run a little quicker and they have faster memory chips that run at 6000mhz instead of 5000mhz like the 290x. It's not that much faster but just enough to make it game dependent and more or less equal to a 980.

Might have found your answer then? Just remember that the MSI Gaming is the highest OC'd card atm from factory and currently I know that EK and XSPC don't have any blocks for them. It's a custom PCB whereas the other's are just rebrands I believe.

I'm crying that I can't get a EK Vaporx water block

the biggest downside (for me at least) is power consumption of gtx 980 is 294w and the R9 390x is 477w at peak draw...

so it's safe to say, sell the gtx 780 at least...

atm corsair ax760, but looking at a few 1000w ones.

i'm looking at a EVGA SuperNova P2 1000w, Seasonic SS-1000XP 1000w and a SuperFlower Leadex Platinum 1000W

You could get away with the ax760 provided OC'ing isn't to the extreme. If you end up upgrading out of the ones you listed the Seasonic and Superflower would be the ones to look at.
