6970 Crossfire power

Hey guys. I've got a friend who wants to add a second 6970 to his system. Right now he is using a 700w psu for his system. He wants to add a secondary 450w psu to help power everthing, similar to this: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817104054&Tpk=N82E16817104054

My opinion on this is that he would be better off getting a quality 1000w power supply instead of something like this. However he seem somewhat insistent to save the extra money and get the independent unit. I told him I'd ask around and see what other people's opinions are on this matter.

So what do ya think? Thanks

I would suggest going for a quality 850 - 1000W PSU. I think the minimum requirement for a 6970 in a complete system is somewhere around 550W? So unless you're overclocking even the graphics, I highly doubt you'd need more than 1000W max. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

He should REALLY stick with one PSU. He will have more overall stability and a more equal power delivery. AX850 will be more than enough.

The extra card should only need somewhere 150 - 200W more power? Yup, I'd think a good 850W will be sufficient.

A 750W PSU will be fine, AMD recommends a 600W PSU minimum for 6870 CFX. As long as it's a decent PSU you will be fine just don't buy a chep ol one, the OCZ Fatility is ok but i'd get a Corsair if you can OCZ products tend to break easy.

EDIT: Actually I failed for some reason I read 6870 not 6970

Just to be on the safe side, you should get a 850W. Your system will only draw as much as it actually needs, so if it doesn't use the full 850W you'll be left with a bit of extra power anyway.

Yeah, I told him to stick with 1 power supply, plus with that secondary unit he was looking at costing around 85USD, it isn't much more to get say an AX850.

Thanks for the advice everyone

He's going to get an AX850 now after everyone's recommendation

Excellent choice mate, I would never recommend using two PSU's unless you really have to.
