Hi,

I got myself a OEM 6870 off eBay and thought it would be a walk in the park to mod it to the XFX black edition BIOS 940/1150.

Previously I only had to use atiflash .chg/.exe files and kept getting adapter not found error.

I then seen a guy who got it sorted with an extra ".bat" file and hey presto clocks up no problemo.

I had to reset by clicking default settings on CCC after reboot to show new defaults.

I had also tried Powerecolors BIOS but fan was noisy and it ran hotter so I presume it had a different cooler.

XFX runs A1.

I actually thought because it was an OEM it was locked out. I did use the "atiflash -unlockrom 0" switch first then "atiflash -f -p 0 name.bin".

So if anyone needs the files I have them here including standard .bin titled "Barts.bin" and the faster one is "xfx.bin".

ALL THE FILES NEEDED 6870:

==6870 BLACK BIOS MOD 940/1150==

1) Run GPU-Z and back up your GPU BIOS.

2) Insert a USB flash drive.

3) Run the "HP USB Disk Storage Format tool".

4) Use the drop down menu for "Device" and select your USB flash drive.

5) Use the drop down menu for "File system" and select FAT.

6) Now select the "Create a DOS startup disk" check box, you will then get the option of choosing the files that

make the USB bootable.

7) Choose the folder that is called "USB BOOT" then select the start button.

8) This process takes a bit of time and will blank your flash drive.

9) when your flash drive is prepped extract/Copy the files:

-atiflash.exe

-atiflash.chg

-flash.bat

-xfx.bin (940/1150)

-old.bin (the one you backed up just to be safe, rename it if you need to)

-Barts.bin (this is an AMD OEM 6870 stock clock BIOS)

10) restart you PC and go into the BIOS menu select your USB as primary hard drive.

11) restart and you PC should boot into the atiflash.

12) type DIR to see whats in the USB you should see all the files.

13) you can type "atiflash /?" to see all the available switches but you only need to use 2-3 at most for this.

14) type "atiflash -ai 0" to get a readout of your primary card. "atiflash -ai 1" will be your secondary card if you

are running a crossfire configuration.(handy if you need to distinguish).

15) type "atiflash -p 0 biosname.bin" (atiflash -p 0 xfx.bin)

16) if it does not allow you to flash type "atiflash -f -p 0 biosname.bin". -f forces the flash.

17) if neither of these work type "atiflash -unlockrom 0" then repeat step 15 or 16

18) it will take a few seconds to complete and ask you to restart, press "Ctrl,Alt,Delete" together.

19) Go into your BIOS menu and select your HDD as primary hard disk again.

20) You may get windows detecting a new device and may be asked to restart.

21) Go into CCC and select default clocks in Overdrive and your clocks should now be reading 940 core and 1150 memory.

22) I suggest this is only done with a reference designed card. You may have a variant with a different fan perhaps wait for the manufacturer to release a OC version with the same PCB etc.

ENJOY YOUR NEW DEFAULT CLOCKS.

This can be applied to most ATI cards if not all just using the right BIOS .bin files.

If you have on board graphics do not worry it should be disabled when you have your pci-e as primary graphics card.

Yea that works sometimes but I had more success with doing it in DOS with USB,I did actually try it this way but it had trouble finding the card and gave "adapter not found error" but when i got the .bat file it worked in DOS for sure, maybe with that file it will work with RBE.

Hey great guide man. I was wondering if hacking the bios to default run clock speed of your choosing is possible for all cards? I have two Sapphire 6970s and was think it would be great once i work out there stable clocks to just lock them too it by editing their bios. that way if i every reinstall or put them in another system i dont have to mess around with overclocking again. what do you think?

Cheers

EDIT: after reading the rest of this thread it seems like this is very possible.

Hi dude,

I would wait and see do any partners release overclocked versions on the reference card, you have a switcharoonie on them too so that option is cool too!

i have a gigabyte 6870 in crossfire, would it be a good idea to do the bios flash? i dont know if it would run hot in a crossfire set up

Can i flash my Sapphire HD6870 Vapor-X with bios from Sapphire HD6870 Toxic using files from TechPowerUp BIOS database follwing this steps???
