6800 ultra overclock?

hi, i am new at this overclocking business

i have a BFG 6800 ultra oc.

at stock, it is clocked at 425mhz

how should i overclock my card to best balance the performance to heating scale?

i am a hard core gamer, so i want to overclock it just enought to reach better performance but at the same time, i want my card to run without overheating for several hours

i don't really trust the "choose the best overclocking frenquency" tester on the coolbits add-on options.

also i bought a pci fan that use the pci slot next to my graphic card and cools the card by blowing air to it. so that should help on cooling.

can anyone tell me the danger zones or max clock that you can reach before you start having overheating/heavy damages to your card?? please provide me GPU clock and mem frequency.

also can anyone recommand me a good GPU clock and mem frenquency that works well?

thanks for any help

with every card its different, trying using coolbits and overclock it at 5 incriments at a time, and when it becomes un stable take it down a bit until you find the highest possible frequency

You won't need to worry about heat damaging your card w/ the ultra cooler since you haven't made any vgpu mods to produce any significant amount of heat.

With that card you should be able to easily push 450-475 core and 1200+ mem. Start with the auto determination script, that will give you a good place to start. Then start increasing your core clock in 5mhz increments and your mem in 5-10mhz increments. You will want to run 3dmark03/05/06 (any of those) after each setting to test for stability. Obviously if your computer locks up you've gone too far. If you get artifacts (random rendering misinterpretations) you've also taken it too far but not to such a point that the system will hang. You will want to slowly lower the clocks until your system doesn't hang and also doesn't produce any artifacts.

Hope this helps mate! Let us know if you have any probs and we'll try to get ya sorted.

thanks guys

well i attempted to oc my card without reading any of that, but i did scan the guide fragtek put up. it was very useful.

as WC said, my final overclocking results are 460 mhz for the chip and 1200 ghz for the mem.

with rthdribl, my card was stable @ 470 mhz and 1250 ghz for them mem.

but when i was finished, i ran a couple of cs:s video stress tests and found artifacts at the end of the test, so i tried 465 mhz and 1200 ghz. but it still had artifacts and it even froze my card for about 4 seconds before it was able to continue running the test. so i backed up to 460 and 1200. and it ran perfectly :D

i am just wondering, can i push my meme a little futher?

my GPU is all done if i want to pass the cs:s video stress test without any problems, but i have been wondering if i can push the mem any higher

wat are some symptoms to indicate the mem is being stressed too much? is it the same as for the chip? artifacts, graphic card freezing.. etc..

also wat are some recommanded values for the mem?

as fragtek said, it should be able to do up to 1200+

but when does it get dangerous? 1400? 1500?

thanks for any help you guys can give me ::

big difference

wow i just increased my mem clock from 1.2 ghz to 1.25 ghz

and DAMN!!! big difference!!!

up to 5 fps in cs:s stress test!!!

wow hti si scrazy stuff:D

Sweet mate nice :) There IS a guide in the sticky's of this section on how to OC an nvdia card btw :)

EDIT: Welcome to :anisx: :wavey:

When ur mem runs out of bandwidth it'll lock up your card, that's the only side affect of an unstable mem clock rate.

@Kemp - He has read this guide, however, as far as I remember, it barely mentions memory. He was bugging me like crap yesterday, and I'm just like, "I've never OCed a gfx before!" (I'm going to soon  )

@PV - The OC bug hasn't really bitten him too much considering he has an Intel board but is unwilling to buy a new one. He does want to try soft-OC since he's been reading about how certain people were able to hit 4. somethin <shrugs>

the end

i think this is as much as i am gonna go

460/1250

i didn't try to max out ocing my mem, but i figure 1250 is pretty high enough..maybe i will try 1300 later and see how stable it is

thanks for all the help guys..

and this forum is legit

jsut a few words

WC... i wasn't bugging u yesterday... lol i was just trying to get anotehr's opinion before i start blowing up my card haha

and i don't think the oc bug will ever hit me./... due to my crappy mobo x.X

ya my mem is topped out. i attempted to do 1260 mhz but it don't let me. it just says it failed the test.. and as for the chip, it can go 470 and be stable on rthdribl. but on source, it gives artifacts during the end of the video stress test. so i was forced to turn it down to 460 :(

but its all good... my card is very stable right now and i am happy with the results :)

Yep

Enjoy the sexy ass fps increase and the extra quality you can add and thanks the overclocking gods for chips with headroom :worship:
