64-bit confusion

In about a week i am going to start ordering parts for my new build, but what confuses me is i cannot find a 64 bit version of windows, i currently have 32 bit on my laptop and wanted to know if i can run 64 bit? On every e-tailer i have looked it says "License Details - 32-/64bit"

first to run 64-bit you need a processor thats capable of running it. My lil ones rig I went to pop win7 64bit on it and it would load because its not a 64bit capable processor ( I thought all 775"s were 64-bit lol) some software comes 32/64 giving you the choice but afaik more are designed for one or the other. I think again iirc the retail version is choice of 32/64 and oem you buy one or the other.

I am going to put a 2500k in there so no problem, but i just can't figure out wether or not i am buying the correct version, so are the two versions on the same disk or what? It doesn't even say on microsofts own website wether it is 64 or 32 bit

EDIT: Lol quadriple post
huh.gif

EDIT2: When i scrolled down a bit it clearly said that it contains both 32 and 64bit

EDIT3: Can i install windows from the vista upgrade version? Or do i need to buy windows again?

if you have vista then yes its upgrade only but I learned way back best to buy full version and do a complete install over upgrade path. Now granted this was back in the windows 95 to 98 upgrade but INHO its better to go full

It is a fresh HDD in a new build so can i boot from it or do i need to waste money?

Oh and when you buy it from MS' website will it be an ISO? Because if it is i might as well just put it on a usb stick

not sure what that website is but afaik it'll be a cd/dvd so its bootable. Plus iirc OEM isnt bootable USB capable

I wanted to do that with mine but after reading the guide it states clearly that OEM isnt able to be used

and HDD's come blank bro you'll have to buy an opsys to put on it

oh I see a digital download then yes I would assume it would come in an iso format so all ya had to do was burn it. let me check it out real quick

cany really find any info that says how its accomplished but I am sure you'll get instructions when ya buy it.

just to let you know mate if you buy the upgrade version then you can simply burn it to disk and when you are installing it will give you an option of Clean install or upgrade(which will be blanked out if you are using a fresh HD)

however you will have to first initialise the harddrive with another pc or it will not show in the clean install option

If you need any screenshots let me know i can get you some

If you have the upgrade version, you could still technically install it to a clean HDD. You basically either double install it, using no serial the first time then the upgrade serial the second, or install it one time and disarm something.

HERE is a quick tutorial, I'll try and find a better one.

Oh and its legal so long as you have a fully licensed (i.e. upgrade-eligible) Windows OS somewhere else in your possession.

Well i suppose i could use my old HDD with XP on it

Does it work if i download a not so legal copy of vista and then upgrade over it?

No, see, if you have the old HDD with XP on it, you are legally eligible for an upgrade. So technically, to save yourself the hassle, you are legally in the clear using the double install method or the registry hack method. Read that link

So as long as you abide by the EULA yada yada yada

The short of the story is if you have an genuine copy of any OS that can be upgraded to Windows 7 (ie in your case you have XP on an old HDD), you are legally allowed to use the upgrade method to install a fresh copy of Windows on a fresh HDD.

ummmmm wtf!!!!! I dont think thats how UPGRADE works. It may of changed but to use upgrade you have to have an opsys installed on the hdd you wish to put 7 on. The upgrade is not a full version nor does it contain the full version. ITS AN UPGRADE which means it changes the files on ur hdd to 7. this is why its 100$ cheaper. If it was the way you say then nobody would purchase the full version making it wasted. My suggestion is to buy a copy (cd/dvd) from a e-tailer so one you can get it a tad bit cheaper than from M$'s site. I paid 117$ for my OEM version and have installed it several times. All it takes is a phone call to activate it when changing components. Phone call is very easy and voice activated all it asks for is the current code displayed on ur screen then it asks how many computers is it installed on. Answer one and it will give you a new activation code and whallah ur done. And by no means should you try and deceive them on this lol when I say one computer it should only be on one computer.

Upgrade works with the double install, and installs the full OS mate. I've done it on other machines, and have plenty of friends who have done it. For me it makes sense, in the UK I get a student discount, so I get the upgrade to Business Windows 7 for £40, or the Ultimate Upgrade Edition for £80, available both x32 and x64. It seriously has the whole thing on though.

Also, users with XP and 2000 have to do a clean install to upgrade (as XP and 7 are tpp different

), so that's further proof that the upgrade has the full thing on.

On PCs purchased with Windows XP or Vista preinstalled by the computer maker -- which slap an "OEM" license of Windows on the machine -- users can install a Windows 7 upgrade edition on that system's blank hard drive, but on no other, Ligman added.

"An OEM license is a full license," Ligman wrote in a comment to this blog post, answering a user's question. "So an OEM + an upgrade gets you the upgraded version."
