4870 problems?

Well Red October lives, sort of. When I POST i get about 30seconds display and then the PC crashes. Ideas? Everything worked fine in my last PC, the only new part being the Radeon 4870.

Other interesting points, there is a red light on the card that lights up, the 3rd away from the motherboard (out of 4)

Ideas?

Make that 2nd from motherboard, not 3rd

Possibly not enough power to it.

Have you uninstalled all the old drivers before slotting in this one?

Maybe get rid of your OC for now, then turn up the clocks again once the card is working?

Gav, I just managed to pull this from the net.. it's pretty selfexplanatory really, I think you have something wrong with your Power A, check to make sure that it is firmly in place, if not.. try swapping the A and B around, see if the LED changes position ;)

D1601 - Red LED On, shows critical temperature fault

D1602 - Red LED On, shows External power connector A was removed

D1603 - Red LED On, shows External power connector B was removed

D601 - Red LED On, shows critical Core power fault

thanks, reeally useful! I will check all connections after my bath (muscles aree killing me after footie). The OC is off for now, and nVidia drivers still lurk on the HD unstil I can get in and remove them

Forgive the bad typing, back on a wireless mini keyboard that misses half the keystrokes...

switched A and B, no change :( Checked the plugs were deffinitly in right, but alas, no gaming for me :(

GR!! I only jut got theh waterblock back on.. any idea how hard that is without drainig a watercooling loop :p

Ooh, I'm sorry LOL you're going to have problems returning it now.. VOID the warranty when you take off the stock cooler.

Did it work with the stock air cooler on it?

Hah.. LOL it pays to pay attention!

Have you mounted it correctly? Is it 100% flat on the surface of the chips? Also.. what thermal paste did you apply to it?

LOL don't edit your posts on me like that! :o makes it hard to keep up! LOL

Yeah you most likely do if it has over heated :p

Turns out its the core issue, not temp. thats worse I fear

Edit: no it is a temp thing... I relaly should invest in glasses or at least wear the ones I have for this sort of thing

i THINK temps are too high, 1601 lights up, indicating high operating temperature. This does seem odd with an EK block on, but I can easily do some more checking tomorrow. Perhaps the MOSFETs are over heating, or the core needs more thermal paste as there is a gap between it and the cooler itself (shot in the dark) either way fingers crossed it plays ball tomorrow.

Put some thermal paste on (reapply it) and see what happens, though it shouldn't overheat within 30 secs of bootup!

EK have been known to have huge problems with their water blocks at the moment, maybe that is your problem!? :(

Sorry, my wisdom is limited in the water cooled graphics area as I have never had to deal with it, I am just thinking up possible solutions to try and help you troubleshoot.

Right, I refitted the stock cooler just incase it was a GPU bug or something, and it seems to work fine. thee only downside is I cannot fit my SB cooler and theh temp of that thing seems to skyrocket :D I will let the PC do a little burn in test just sitting in the BIOS before I go any further. just incase the B can't take no cooler so no point trying to hit Vista in that case. In short, it is not dead, but its hardly an ideal sollution I have at thhe moment...

Will refit the GPU block once I get some foods down me

Good news.

I refit the waterblock with some thicker thermal pads which seems to stop te card bending, also maybe means the MOSFETs cool quicker as I sat in the BIOS for 10min and all was ok. Lacking a DVD drive I couldnt go into Vista and install Catalyse Control Centre, so maybe later tonight I can game!

my friend had the same problem man. the 2nd light stayed on, I got into windows. I touched the card nearly burned myself. I pulled the card, reseated the waterblock and then put it on its own loop and that solved the problem for me. But just recently added the memory to the same loop as the video and all is still good.

I hope that helps. Let us know how it goes..

Oh up to 8.9 already? I *think* my disk had 8.8 or 8.7, downloading the now and will stick it on my network and boot the other maachine up once I have finished painting tiles :( I was going to stick it in another loop but space wise this case is not THAT big and that would mean anotheer large radiator, trying to cut back on my spendings :D CC does have a temperature report app yes? Or would I have to use something like NiBiToR?
