4790K Strange behaviour

Hi all!

Just got a 4790K (from 4670k) and noticed right away that when stressing with Cinebench or OCCT the cpu was at 4.2Ghz while on the desktop it was happy to boost at the normal 4.4, temps were at 60c max.

When overclocking i got a nice 4.7 at 1.150V and temps up to 85c with OCCT which seems a bit high given the volts? was getting these temps with the 4670k at 1.35V...

I'm now sitting at 4.4 and 1.1V with temps up to 62c since i don't trust this cpu one bit.

Bios and software it's all up to date and everything runs super cool, any idea about what's going on? as i was happy to run it at stock :(

System specs:

Gryphon Z87
16GB 1866 Fury
Corsair RM850
Corsair H60 push/pull
Asus 760 Mars

What board are you using?

Is the cpu overvolting itself under load? mine does

I have been looking for some insight on the ROG forums because of this. I know my cpu needs roughly 1.31v for 4.75, however on my maximus vii hero no matter what I try and use be it manual, adaptive or offset it always overvolts the cpu and i end up pulling 1.328 which I am not happy with for 24/7.

This is with llc off/at its lowest setting

The temps are fine, never once hits 68c but the voltage makes me cringe

I have an Asus Z87 Gryphon, no mine doesn't overvolt by itself.

I just got 4.9 at 1.260v and 87c under stress but then it requires more than 1.325 for 5ghz and was getting too hot very quickly.

Are you using cpuz because that doesn't report the right voltages for me, i had to use asus ai suite to see the actual voltages being pulled by the cpu they were topping out a lot higher than I had set.

Are you in manual, adaptive or offset?

TBH I have found that even manual mode overvolts on my maximus, it does my head in. I can't account for temps other than that. its odd that I've only had OCCT and ai suite reporting the actual drawn voltage and everything else has shown lower. I just wondered if the same was happening for you

Thats the load line calibration too high (LLC)

I thought so too, but I checked all my settings and I had it set manually to level 1 ran some apps (cinebench etc) same thing happened.

I started to doubt and despite having been at this for yonks I second guessed myself and thought maybe somehow on this board it was different that all the others ive had and that maybe it was the other way round, set it to 9.....9 is defo full LLC lol.

I've flashed back to a previous bios and it seems to be much more consistent voltage wise now still pulling 1.328 with llc on level 1 with voltage set to 1.31 but I guess I can live with that :/

Everything seems to report different voltages though, occt, cpu-z and ai suite all give me different vcores :(
