Hi guys new to the fourm

So my current specs

amd 955be
8gb ddr3 1333
xfx 7950
ocz ssd
xfx 550w psu
nzxt phantom

I feel like the cpu needs a upgrade, i have about £250 to spend, the 8350 could go straight into my mobo or do i spend the extra and go intel?

I play at 1080p on games like bf3 and arma

Any advice would be great

Thanks in advance

I'd get the FX-8350 if you've the motherboard for it.

If you fancy Intel you'd probably be better off waiting for their Haswell release.

If you are conssidernig a 3570K then you might as well wait a week for the Haswell 4470k.

The 8350 is a good option though, also cheaper. If you want to save money though, for £250 you could get a 990FX motherboard and a 8320.
There's hardly any difference between the 8320 and 8350 and it's £30 cheaper, get the 8350 if you can though.

If you went with a 3570/4470k you are looking at an extra £70 odd quid on top of your £250 for the CPU and a decent 1155/1150 mobo.

i was thinking alone the lines that the new consoles are 8 cores so might be better for games over a 4 core intel?

this is so hard to choose i used to have a intel before my amd so im not bothered about brand

its just amd get so much stick nowdays its making it a hard one to decide

I reckon games will benefit more from an AMD 8 core more than they will over Intel with the new consoles being AMD as well.

Some of the newer games now already run better on the 8350.
With console games being made to run on 8 cores as well as being written with x86 instructions, (same as PC) when they get ported or rather converted to PC, I can see them running better on the AMD 8 cores than on Intel seen as that was what they were originally made to run on.

Welcome indeed!
And I'd personally get the 8350, but it's all down to you.
If you really want the best performance for BF3, and probably BF4, get the 8350.

Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 is my mobo , its cheap so i don't mind the intel switch

I can get the 8350 from work for £150 but no discount really on the intel only a few quid

the eight core can play arma really well if you do the core optimization fix for it (heck most CPUs do). I did see a major increase in performance over my i3 (especially in ARMA 3) when it had my 7870. Otherwise I'd wait for Haswell.

That wouldn't be the best board for the 8-core. Its an entry level Northbridge and I'm only seeing a 4-pin CPU power connector so overclocking the 8 core probably wouldn't be feasible.

The 990FX boards are the best option for the 8350 really.

being just a couple of weeks (maybe days i dont know) away from haswell being released, i'd say to wait (if possible) for the prices to drop and save a couple of quid.

Yeah I'd say wait too. Normally I don't wait because there are new things coming out all the time but with Haswell literally right around the corner as in about a week, might as well wait and see what it brings.

Both CPUs will do you good. While the i5 is great for singlethreaded games the 8350 is great for multithreaded. Newer games tend to be multithreaded so if you want a "future proof" CPU i would go with the 8350. PS4 or Xbox one or whatever both use 8 core CPUs and this forces game devs to change the way games work in favor of multithreading. If you like older games like starcraft or any other singlethreaded game the i5 is definitely the winner.

Though 8350 or I5 in starcraft/skyrim is not the difference between playable and not playable.

With multi-platform games PC may get the main development and then ported over to consoles. Either way AMD gets a boost!

Edit: I say get a cheap 8320 and wait till steamroller comes out towards the end of the year. Steamroller will improve 15% overall performance over piledriver. Link

Ps4 is the Liverpool processor which will feature a 64-bit x86 architecture, with a minimal power consumption, eight cores and hardware threads with 2MB L2 cache for each of the four-core groups each of which also has a 32kb L1 I/D-cache, so at best it’s on par with an intel i3 processor.
So from a cost exercise point of view I would say go for the 8350 + 99ofx board,
From a tech point of view wait for haswell and get the 4670K however very over priced for what it is,
Hope this is of some help to you

I'd say wait. I've got an X4 955 too and paired up with a radeon 6970 i'm not having too much trouble with modern games. Crysis 3 ran without a hitch or slow down at high, tomb raider was fine even at ultimate and bioshock runs ok with ambient occlusion knocked back to normal. I don't play BF3 so can't say anything about that, but i imagine larger 64 player maps will be the area which will tax the cpu the most. Personally i have that upgrade itch and i am ignoring it, waiting for steamroller. TBH i'm most interested in excavator but don't think i can keep that upgraditis problem at bay for that long.

Is your phenom overclocked at all?

I would love to know how you came up with these specs even though it hasn't even been confirmed yet. And also the part that has been confirmed on the cpu is it's "Jaguar" based.

Where are you guys looking? Lol
Sony even stated at the reveal it will be Jaguar based:p Or at least i am pretty sure they did..
Quick google search and i got this. Link.
Specs will be about halfway down the page from the half way mark. So 1/4 of the page:p
