32bit to 64bit

Just reverted to 64bit last week. Only issue I've had is with CoreTemp, though there's a workaround if I didn't use Speedfan or whatever.

Apart from that, awesome and far smoother than 32bit once you stick 4GB in there - seems Vista was really made with 4GB+ in mind (bit like XP on 2GB)

I got ubuntu 64bit on here just for the fact SMP requires it. I've been meaning to try some 64-bittage for XP for a while. Maybe vista one day..

+1. Vista Home Premium X64 with 4GB of RAM has been unbelievably smooth and snappy for me, especially running SP1 RC1. It really makes Vista more refined. With 2GB you're constantly paging stuff, especially in games. With 4GB, Vista doesn't page stuff nearly as much (as you will notice as idle/boot/whatever ram usage increases).

Seems like developement u see has an emphasis on 64 bit versions.

Not really liking Vista 32bit at all. The experience is close to dreadful. Programs not liking it, even ones boasting Vista.

So, the option was to try again with a full install and cancel things out whilst leaving them there. (as oposed to the vlite side of things) The vlited Vista 32 on the gaming pc seems ok, but we are talking vlited enough to fit on a cd with that one.

So I figured give the 64bit a try whilst I`m at it.

U guys fully install it and cancel what u don`t want to use after ? (IE / Mail / Firewall / UAC / whatever)

Wish the conversion to Vista in work wasn`t as certain as it looks >.<

Well, this Vista wants to take 25 minutes to transfer 12g, then I gonna Acronis the drive for old times sake, got 64bit drivers for everything, so we`ll go full 64bit non stripped Vista and see what happens.

Gonna install as per new, sticking 4GB stock in place of the 2GB patriot.

Redskins have a game on in about 15mins, so I`ll be in good shape lol

For me using 64 bit, coretemp and rivatuner are pretty difficult to use. Rivatuner I'd say is the more important program to me. It means booting it up and hitting f8 and going into the non signed driver version. Which is a pain. And more of a pain, I need to borrow a ps2 keyboard in order to do that.

O Rly? Surely enable USB in the BIOS?

Allowing unsigned mode is annoying, but tbh I wish they'd release programs that work with 64bit, it's not like they haven't know the 64bit spec for ages....although I appreciate the 2 programs mentioned are open source :)

Well.

You would have thought I'd have checked that. But no.

Now I have, it's fine. Thanks a lot !

*chucks out beige ps2 keyboard*

:D

Your right and really its up to someone to put pressure on developers to do it right. If 64 bit is the near future then why don't they start now?!

LMAO ali_james

Pretty straight forward process. Redskins won too which was nice.

OC3D forum shouting at me about INSTALL FLASH :p

Weird how it seems I`ve got IE & IE (64 bit), and Program Files (x86) - well that`s a bit more obvious.

is Vista SP1 worth downloading? is it stable?

Dunno if it`s worth doing that as opposed to just upd8ing on the thingy.

Service pack is ~normally~ cleaner. But hey, there`ll be SP1 fixes out to download after that I have no doubt.

EDIT: Maybe a bit of a silly question, but remembering 16bit to 32bit datatypes, can u rely on things like Flash installs to do the 64bit thing ? or does it matter ?

Flash installs fine mate on it's own. Most stuff just runs as a 32bit app if it isn't native 64bit. If a program doesn't work, sticking it to run in WinXP compatibility mode usually does the trick

I just purchased Vista Ultimate 64 retail so i'm ready for when i upgrade to 4gb ram. So glad i got the 64 version and the only prob i have had is Core Temp but got the workaround running as previously said above.

What does that mean?

Is it some sort of bios riva?

I am going to order 64bit vista, another 2gb or sell mine and get a 4gb kit along with a new HDD...

If 64bit is a pita I don't need the ram, or the os...!

I heard gaming an benchmarking is even worse on 64bit than 32bit vista.

Thing is I want dx10 so...

ing up the pros and cons of vista 32 vs 64 or stick with xp... ;)

Edit: You can't say t0ss? That isn't even rude!

If you are going to vista you may aswell go to 64bit, it is afterall the future.

Besides memory is being needed more and more everyday, 4gb is getting more standard on vista. 6-8gb is even possible now quite easily. Ram rocks.

But when I used vista it killed my overclocking. Idk if that was just me being stupid though.
