3 pin splitter fan on asus p8z77-v pro and fan control option

hi i m going to buy this motherboard, the question is that i m going to install more fans than the number which this motherboard supports, and propably i m going to use 2 pin splitters for the extra fans, do you know if these fans can be controlled through the fan xpert2 of asus? or do you recommend me to use a molex to 3 pin from psu and a fan controller in order to control activate/deactivate that extra fans, if yes which fan controller do you recommend?

For using that many fans, I would recommend a fan controller. A splitter will work yeh, but you'll have so many cables going round the place it'll just be a mess.

Most 3 pin fan controllers let you turn off the fans completely, as well as control the speeds - obviously...

Just depends how advanced you want it to be - ie Do you want a touch screen? Or just simple with no screen at all or what?

I currently have an NZXT Sentry 2 which does a perfect job for me, and it has long cables so you can easily connect your fans wherever they are. Dont know if you'd feel the same about spending £30 on a fan controller though?

If you go to: http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/customer/Fan-Controllers-cid-662.html

You cant really go wrong with any of them tbh, they're all just basically voltage resistors that slow the fans down so they all work in the same way - you're just paying for how many channels you want (how many fans you can operate) and any optional 'gadgets' like a touch screen, or in the case of the BitFenix Hydra, internet connectivity

One thing to add about the NZXT Sentry 2 though - it has 3 pin and 4 pin molex connectors on each cable, so you can control 2 fans through each channel without the need for any adapters.

Hope this helps

thanks for the answers, i prefer something with touch screen or not with big buttons cause it will not fit in to my case: corsair 550d , cause it has a door in front..

i cant find in any fan controller the ption on off? i just want to install 2 fans on the fan controller, the rest will be handled by the motherboard's utility fan xpert2: the mobo is: asus p8z77-v pro

Tbh, if you're getting a fan controller, you may as well do the whole set of fans? Dont really see the point using on board headers when you have a dedicated fan controller.

I'm pretty confident in saying that all/most of the touch screen do have the option to turn it off. I know the NZXT and BitFenix ones do, and I'm very confident the Aerocool series do too.

the cheapest option is to use pwm fans with y spliters, the noctua fans are very good for this type of setup

thanks for the info, you are right, i ll put all the available fans on the fan controller, i have also the Lamptron FC Touch Fan Controller and i like it more than the other that you suggest me, it handles 6 fans! what about the power consumption, is it better fans to be handled by the mobo or by a fan controller? whats the benefits and the disanvantages? thanks a lot

yes i agree, but i have to buy a fan controller cause i m going to use more than 7 or 8 fans, the mobo has the option to install 6 fans. thnx

The y spliters (so you can run two fans off one headed) come with the noctua fans and if you wanted to you can run 4 noctua nf-f/p 12s off of one headed

yes, but these fans could be controled seperatelly? having also the fuction on/off of each one? thnx

Completely individually no. But if you have for example 2 in the roof, then in my opinion they dont need to be controlled separately. Also, for me, I'm happy to put the rear exhaust and the front intake on the same channel but it's all preference. Also, if you have 2 fans on a CPU cooler then I have mine controlled together too, although I know most people prefer to keep them on the motherboard header.

And how do you mean benefits and disadvantages between controlling from motherboard and controller?

The fans use the same amount of power wherever you put them. Obviously there's a tiny bit extra if there are LEDs or a touch screen controller in a drive bay, but it shouldnt matter too much. I trust if you are needing to run 8 chassis fans then you'll be using a good power supply anyway? so it shouldnt really matter

yes i agree with your opinion but i have read that sometimes motherboard headers are getting corrupted when used splitter on it, i m going to by the seasonic's x-660 a very good psu i think,

hm benefits or disadvantages i mean like the power consumption when motherboard doesnt need to control these fans if it could have better performance etc. but i dont think so.. anyway

thanks

i use 7v reducers instead of controllers too much spagetti as it is now with high fan counts.

find a fan with the desired flow adn if you need it quieter, use a resisitor ($ 0.29).

best advice I can give ya is get a fan controller. I know there are lots of 3-4 pin fan headers on the mobo. Do not I repeat do not run more than one fan on any mobo header. you are risking frying it and you will have no recourse with the manu. They put those on for those who run stock systems. Another member in the past asked this same question, and went against advice and ran y splitters on it for all his fans and less than a week later he was back crying his mobo went bad. I cant say it enough use the psu and a fan controller do not put any fans on the mobo you dont absolutely have to. I.E. Cpu fan or fans that come with like the sabertooth for chipset cooling. If you dont plan on overclocking then ONE fan per mobo header only please.

I actually run 2 large fans on the deluxe off one header. I forget how much each fan draws but its fine as long as the total for both fans is within the headers spec. just look it up in the manual or on asus site. Also be sure to use 3 wire splitter as it can read the rpm on the fans even if you use 2 fans. it just reads the rpm of the fastest fan. works great with asus fan xpert and better then a 3rd part controller because you can set profile by cpu socket temp. ramp up when hot silent when cool.
