295X2 Questions

Morning all,

My 295X2 arrived and so did I! But I has issues...

I downloaded the latest 14.12 CCC download, after analyzing my system it didn't come up with the option to install any display or audio drivers, I installed it anyway but CCC wouldn't open.

So then I basically ran DDU Cleaner, safe booted in out in out and shook it all about. Tried installing it again but nope, still no drivers so I cleaned up again and put the latest Beta driver on which did the trick, only problem is in CCC under CrossFireX, there is no enable/disable option?!

In GPU-Z it does say CrossFire is enabled, although I could still do with the option to enable/disable it myself because some games won't work well in CrossFire.

Has anybody got any knowledge on whats going on?

Also Domm is going to scream at me for asking but I'm scared my PSU can't handle it, basically I was like yeah single rail 71 amps if I remember right but the leaflet that comes with it is so confusing and is telling you that two PCI-E ports on your PSU are basically linked so you can only use one, so use one from the other two sets, trouble is I can't find the info for my AX860 on the layout and current of the PSU.

Do I not need to worry about this seeing as my PSU is only single rail?

It's not hard to install/uninstall drivers. Just let AMDs built in remover do it. http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/GPU57RemoveOldGraphicsDrivers.aspx
Then just follow these instructions to install
http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/catalyst-windows-install.aspx

I've always done it this way. Not a single issue on any computer using AMD.

I've had problems with that built in remover before. It can cause issues for certain setups. You seem to be in the minority of people who actually don't have issues with it. DDU is a much more surefire way of doing it.

Shaun has not done anything wrong. Its just that AMD have decided to remove the crossfire bit from CCC/14.9 drivers for 295x2. Crossfire is enabled don't worry. PSU wise you can run it off that BUT if I was you I'd get a 1kw one, just for piece of mind as it is getting towards the limit :).

In the OC3D review Tom used a PSU with a single 12v rail
In the Linus Tech Tips review he used a PSU with a single 12v rail
Austin Evans used a single 12v rail PSU
Hardware Canucks used a single 12v rail PSU
Tech of Tomorrow used a single 12v rail PSU
Kit Guru used a single 12v rail PSU
Anandtech used a single 12v rail PSU
Bit-Tech used a single 12v rail PSU
TechPowerup used a single 12v rail PSU

Shall I go on ? ^_^

They removed the option ?

I had the enable disable option in CCC on 14.12, Unless I got a funky version of CCC.

If you go to the gaming tab under CCC you should be able to create an application profile that turns off CFX

Just reading around it seems you weren't the only one with the issues. AMD do market it as the fastest card you can buy so they probably want to make people forget it is technically two GPUS..

+ they wanted to make sure CFX was enabled because there must have been people complaining that their 7990 didn't perform much better than a 7970 on its own xD

So it is enabled?

But what if you want to disable one?

Edit: Is there anything official from AMD on this?

Why would you disable one? If a game doesn't support crossfire, it simply won't use one of the GPUs, atleast thats how I think it'll work.

Don't some games support CrossFire but shit optimization though for example hence wanting to go single GPU for that particular game?

Edit: Reply from AMD on Facebook:
Hi Shaun, Congratulations on your purchase of the fastest graphics card available. As an owner of dual 295x2's myself, i can inform you that this is by design and is perfectly normal. Should you wish to disable Crossfire for a particular game, all you need to do is create a profile within CCC under application settings for the game in question. Click the profile (once you've added the game exe) and scroll down and set CrossfireX to disabled, click save and away you go. See this screenshot below for an example. Does this make sense?

Yeah thats what I've read as well when I googled it. Crossfire is not too bad these days.

I think a few games actually perform better when they arent trying to use crossfire. As far as I was aware, cant you just create a custom profile and then have the option to disable it.

Yeah looks like it. Now I've had a reply from AMD I'm more at ease haha.

Was it AMDMatt who replied to you on Facebook.

As he runs a couple of 295X2s and often disables CF to post single core scores on the bench threads I run.

Yeah I think Matt runs the facebook page. I presume this is his rig?
