So according to this AMD could give the R9 290 a starting price of $449.99, making $100 cheaper than the R9 290X. Supposedly the 290 only has 256 lost stream processors , 16 Texture Mapping Units , and has a slightly lower GPU clock speed (946mhz). Does the price make it better value for money than the 290x?

I think that this card will only cause a further lowering in prices, which is fantastic for all of us! Hopefully AMD don't do a dumb dumb and let companies release their versions soon.

the Nvidia price drops just went into effect, now the next few days will be interesting

At the end of November I will make a decision what to get myself, I currently am looking at the 7990 but if it looks like the 290 will be good or if one of the 780s I want get a big price drop I'll get one of those. Either way it will be a hard choice for me.

The 7990 can be had from around 380 to 449, either way its a huuuuge price drop. I should probably add in terms of 780 I've been eying the gainward phantom 780. The cooler is pure sex.

My issue with the price drops is that they're really tempting but I don't want to do what I did with my 7870 again (buy it and a month later the superior 7870 tahiti is released).

This is madness, 290 releases and 780s come down. Then the 780ti will come and the 290/290x will come down a little more and the vendors get to go nuts with coolers which will bring the 780/780ti down a bit maybe. All this and the 7xxx hopefully hits rock bottom.
