150gb SATA2 WD Raptors becoming a reality!

I couldn't believe the Storage Review review wasn't linked in this thread !

The conclusion ? "Breathlessly waited for by enthusiasts around the world, the Raptor WD1500 improves upon its predecessor by margins of up to 21% when it comes to our single-user productivity and gaming tests. " - Wowsers !

Looks like a truly amazing drive, but it's a shame about the cost. Perhaps one for just the OS and a few choice applications...

its still slightly cheaper than buying 2 74gb raptors and your getting 2gb of extra space and a 21% improvement in performance!

but then wouldnt 2 74gb raptors setup in an array = double the performance??

They wouldn't give double the performance, but they would give a better performance that one Raptor 150.

I don't imagine that there is any guarantee that two 74gb raptors in raid WOULD give a performance benefit. It would make for an interesting comparative test (which I would be happy to complete if someone wanted to send me the drives ;))

Well if you look at the SR benchies, in some cases the 74 is beating the 150 and in others is it close. Having two in Raid would give the same amount of cache, and potentially double the bandwidth of the 150. Having four 36s in Raid would probably be faster than two 74s or a 150.

Main problem with the 150 is that its twice the price of the 74, but not twice the performance. The fact that there is no reduced noise is also a down point. The extra cache is useful, but not worth the price when you compare other 16mb drives to their 8mb counterparts.

I like the fact that you can achieve more space with less drives but still retain the speed. 600gb's of Raptorage would definately suit my computer nicely, hehe.

I feel a Fragtek spending spree going on ;)

Hehe would definately be nice :D

After some looking on WD's website they have them ready to ship! NICE! The specs do unveil that Phnom was correct in the assumption that they were SATA 150 and not 300. Very unfortunate indeed. Still nice to see the inclusion of NCQ and the 16mb cache.

At the manufacturers price it's less expensive to buy one of these than tape together two 74 gig Raptors. This definately looks promising! I'll wait for Newegg to get em in stock and give some sort of rebate before I pick up my set :D

Holy crap, over here that would be ~£900

Hey... I thought I practically posted that myself... :( :p :D

The equivalent to purchase 600 gigs worth here is about £700.

Thats still £200 less though, although even that doesn't leave much for a pc to go with the storage. Tbh it would be better to have a fast system drive like a Raptor 74gb and then two other drives, one for the page file (could be old and small) and then a big one for storage, such as a hitachi 500gb.

I may get a 76gb for OS. With my 2 x 40gb deskstars in RAID 0 for gaming and my other IDE 76GB drive for storage I reckon I'll be easily sorted for space and speed :)

Now Jim - send me that drive module ;)
