My mate is building a new gaming rig and wanted some feedback on the parts he has chossen

specs:

1 x Intel Core 2 DUO Extreme Edition X6800 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.93GHz

1 x Asus P5N32-SLi Premium WiFi PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-175-AS)

2 x Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8888C4 TwinX

2 x BFG GeForce 7950 GX2 OC 1024MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI

1 x BFG Ageia PhysX Accelerator

2 x Western Digital Raptor X 150GB (in RAID 0)

4 x Seagate Barracuda ES 750GB

1 x Asus DRW-1608P3S 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter

1 x Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro

1 x Zalman CNPS9500-AT Aero Flower

1 x U2-UFO Black Powder Coat

9 x Akasa AK174CB-4BLB 120mm Blue LED Fan

so what do you think?

watercooling will come at a later stage as and when he can afford it.

he has ordered the parts and just waiting for the MM case and the mobo to come

I wouldn't use the nVidia Intel board as generally they're pretty awful for overclocking...but I spose it's up to him ;)

Also spending that much on graphics cards seems madness to me with nVidia's next gen cards due out in a matter of weeks!

Will the Sound Blaster and the PhysX card both fit on the board with SLI? Most boards this doesn't fit.

It's a very expensive build but it seems like he's watsed a lot of money in some areas where he could wait and get far better parts

This is either a wind up or your mate is a little out of his mind.

Looking at spending £700 on 2 NVidia cards is madness when G80 is only a few weeks away (as jim said).

Also why not save alot of money by buying a lower model cpu like a E6600 and then he can afford water cooling which would allow him to probably clock it past the E6800 anyway.

Apart from that its a very nice build though ;)

I think your friend wasted a lot of money. G80 = Soon. P5N32-SLI = Junk. All of that stuff and only one DVD burner (what about coping discs on the fly?) . And there's no way you'll be able to fit the X-Fi and PhysX card on that board at the same time. I'd return the PhysX card, mobo, and vid cards. Then I'd get a better board that unofficially supports SLI and get a cheap vid card to hold over until G80's are out then get a pair of those.

The guy obviously has more money than brains, so why not a pair of G80's eh? Would be pretty 1337 in 3dMark05 :D haha

Edit: I don't see a power supply on that list. What you need is the new 1kw PCP&C with the single 72a 12v rail. That's going to be like the only PSU on the market that could possibly handle dual G80's mefinks.

What about the Enermax Galaxy? That looked pretty nice to me.

I wouldn't trust any Enermax PSU to power dual G80's no matter what it's rated for. Enermax PSU's are great intermediate supplies, but when you start getting in to full-on gaming rigs like this, PCP&C is the only choice in my book :)

The PCP&C 1kw Single Rail unit is where its at. No problems with certain rails not having enough amperage for certain things etc..

I've heard that the Enermax Galaxy is a great PSU, but the 5 rail design is a bit stupid IMO with cards coming out soon that are gonna consume 25a each..

even tho ive told him that the G80 GFX cards are comming out in a matter of weeks he has order the parts for the build

he never listen's and i cant wait to see the look on his face when he cant fit 2 pci cards in his system.

oh well i tried

thankies for all the comments tho

:wavey:

The Enermax actually has one internal rail, but they say their are 5 rails to comply with some new spec. I saw a pic of it with them all connected internally, but I can't find it now, but if you say that PCP&C are better I will believe you. I wish they were modular though.

PCP&C are superior power supplies to everything on the market...except maybe Zippy :)

The Galaxy has 1 transformer for the +12v rails, but afaik the output is distributed across 5 rails.

Hook us up with some linky if you've seen otherwise as i'd be interested to check it out. I know some units such as the Tagan 2force have the ability to combine rails - but i've not seen this on the Enermax.

I was right and wrong, there are two rails one for the motherboard power and one for everything else. Here is the link http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/365/6.

It is a very indepth review, tell me what you think.
