That's right, Western Digital is preparing for the launch of the new Raptor which will be available in two flavors: Gamer Edition and Server Edition. It's still unknown what the differences between the two will be but just know that they are coming! With any luck in the first quarter of '06.

Here's the preliminary specs...

Capacity: 150Gb

RPM: 10,000

Interface: SATA2 w/ NCQ

Cache: 16Mb

Pwnage: Yes

:worship: Western Digital :worship:

Rumor has it these drives will be priced in the $300 range. I'll take 2 please! :wavey:

sounds nice for the price

Just hope they work out relatively ok for the uk , will start price comparisons shortly in order to spend my christmas money wisely.:p

Meh, Seagate Cheetahs have crapped all over Raptors for years, and still do.

IMHO, buying SCSI hd's + controller is the equivalent of flushing dead presidents down the toilet... Far too expensive when great performance can still be had for MUCH less.

Yep totally agreed. Whats the point of an expansion card when you can just plug and thug :ar:

Thats the point though, 150gb Raptors are pointless, 74gb are sufficient, people only need 100gb+ when they've got music and videos and pictures and other crap on a drive, which don't need the performance of a raptor to run.

Well I store my benching progs on my secondary RAID partition instead of my OS partition just to leave it some room to breath... I'll be all over these new 150 giggers when they come out. Cost effective speed, w00t!

Umm no, I have 2 200gb full and a 120gb full, speak for yourself

NCQ and SATA - 2 are the features that seen to stand out more.

Yeh but they're not full of vital progams needed for gaming are they? I have two 250gbs in raid which take general crap like music and videos and documents etc, and then put gaming/windows stuff on my raptor. A raptor is for gaming, not storing your life on.

No they aren't.

The Raptor 150 WON'T have Sata II but it will have all the features except it will be 150 instead of 3gb/s, because it won't produce enough bandwidth to need it. NCQ however is usefull, and you don't need Sata II for NCQ.

Incidentally, as the Raptor 74 is 2 Raptor 36 platters, the 150 uses 4 Raptor 36 platters.
