Manual is definitely the way to go. I saw a video by Shaun Cole from The Simpit showing how manual is faster which seems weird but I am consistently faster with Manual over paddle shift every time.
edit - Wraith some of those mods look interesting. I like the idea of the USB adapter for the pedals. I have mine under my desk alongside the Saitek Combat Rudder Pedals but I move the wheel out of the way and clamp it to the side of the desk when I'm not using it. The downside is the pedals are attached to the wheel base so it's a right PITA with cables going everywhere and can't be good for the connections when they're at the limits of stretch. This would mean the pedals can be plugged in on their own and I can basically just put the wheel in the cupboard when I'm not using it.
