Z77 Motherboard Choice

Hi guys,

Coming round to my build time now, and have every part chosen apart from the motherboard!

Will be running a 3770k, with a 7970, with dual 240mm rads in a CM 690.

So, which motherboard?

Been looking at the P8Z77 - Pro, and thinking that has everything I need for the price range, so I dont necessarily NEED to spend more than that. However, my budget is pretty flexible, and I would really like to keep the red/black colour scheme going throughout the whole system.

So, what do you reckon?

I'm a bit wary of ASROCK as a brand, and know the board wont perform as well as the ASUS. And it seems foolish to spend another £45 to get the Fatal1ty pro just to keep colours.

I am however considering the Maximus V formula when it's released, but does anyone have any ideas of UK price and release dates?

Also, has anyone got any other board ideas? If not black and red, maybe just limited on other ostentatious colours like blue!

Thanks for the help

What's your budget for the board? Around the price of the Z77 Pro?

Actually no, ASRock boards nowadays perform very well indeed. The Fatal1ty series wouldn't be a bad choice at all (although i'm not much of a fan of the Fatal1ty boards, but that's just my personal opinion on them). You could wait for the Maximus V, but i have no idea what the price will be

The Maximus is bound to be around £250, in my opinion, if you are spending that much money on a motherboard you may as well go 2011 and get a 3280.

For 1155, any motherboard up to £150 or above is good enough, the MSI GD65 is one of the best z77 motherboards at the moment, the gigabyte and Asus ones are just as good though.

£250 would be fine for me, I was expecting around £350, I have heard it will be around $350, but I think that is only speculation. As for the 2011, why? what would a locked 3820 give me over an unlocked 3770k?

Why workstation above deluxe? whats the difference?

Thanks

I personally don't think spending that much money on an 1155 motherboard is worth it when a £150 mother board can do the same job.

At least with 2011 you can upgrade to an Ivy Bridge Extreme CPU without having to change the motherboard, 1155 is technically a dead socket now because there will be no more CPUs released for it.

Depends on what you are using your PC for though, if it's for gaming then you wouldn't notice the difference between a 3570K, 3770K and a 3820. If you do a lot of encoding, rendering, 3D work etc then a 3770K would be best.

I'm wanting it for gaming primarily, and I know all those processors will be good.

However, I would also want to do overclock as highly as I can, so I'd prefer an Ivybridge. Also, this build is from money from my 18th, and it'll be an upgrade from a Phenom 965, so for some reason, I'd just prefer to go with an i7! Probably more for sentiment and stuff rather than expecting massive performance differences between the 3570k and the 3770k. But still, it's up to me!

I have considered 2011 with the 3930k, which may still be an option, just dont want Mummy to be annoyed that I wasted all her savings from the past 18 years on a computer haha. So despite having the funds for it, I'm trying to hold back! and since I started off with the idea to get just the Ivybridge and a new motherboard for like 400......then I added graphics.....then I added watercooling....then I added graphics watercooling too....

Just probably a bit overkill...a bit

But it is still an option

It's up to you what you buy dude, just sayin you could save money on the motherboard and CPU and use the money saved on something you will see a performance increase from, or something that will benefit you more like a better GPU, larger SSD, better case or better watercooling.

Cant fault my Sabertooth at all. Only boils down to wether you like the Shroud on it or not, and the Brown isnt actually that bad, when its in your hands you dont notice it much at all.
