You Can Now Buy Skyrim Mods on Steam

You can now officially buy Skyrim Mods on Steam, but with the chance of rampant plagiarism on the Steam Workshop and Valve taking a 75% cut, is this one step too far?

Read more on the addition of paid for mods on the Steam workshop here.

Worst thing ever, only encourages bad stuff, the store alone is a right mess already and now people can charge money for mods which have a huge potential of being utter shit.

So they're going to start charging for mods that we can download for free right now? Hmmm, that'll work.....NOT.

Its mainly to help modders make money for the time they spend on it. You don't have to buy them. Its up to the modder on charging or not. I think it's a rather good idea. TF2 has a similar marketplace style as well. Getting paid for your time on making work. If all the big modders move to steam paid mods then you kinda got no choice. Especially if they copyright it.

Yeah look how well TF2 has turn out now, nothing but a bunch of kids playing that game now

If I believed that the modders were getting the coin, I might agree with it. I'd like to know the percentages. Even then, I'd probably avoid em, since I've ODed on Skyrim enough. :) I like the idea of modders getting paid, but if it's only a 25% slice and Steam takes the other %75, then screw them.

Most people will just find away around them, But if it costs on steam but it's free on Nexus i know what people will end up doing.

In this world today it's about getting stuff for nothing, Some modders do it for love, cause they love the game and don't care about the money.

No ta! I'll stick to game communities like Assetto Corsa, where mods are free and you have the option to donate should you wish.

What is happening with the skyrim mods is that when you pay for the mod you get the latest mod but through Nexus is the older version, but it's going to happen with other games too

Yes you can, But i think what will happen is those mods will not get updated as much

Depends on if they are charging for it or not. If they want some money then they will move it from the free to the paid section. By being paid it should encourage them to want to create higher quality mods. That's the idea at least.

Yeah like you said "That's the idea at least" we will see in another 6 months time

I'm not against the idea of modders charging for their work. The amount of effort they put into it is tremendous, and I think it's reasonable for them to receive compensation.

However, there are two things I take issue with.

One is the cut that Valve takes - if it's genuinely 75%, then we're effectively paying quadruple what the modder needs to charge, and I don't think that's acceptable.

Two is that there's no control over who posts the content. It's inevitable that people are going to steal free mods and start putting them on Steam to sell them. Then people won't want to put free mods on Nexus or similar. Then... the only option left is for everyone to charge. Which doesn't sound great.

Also goes to the Devs. Its a great idea but it feels rushed.. should have had more time to implement a system that can deal with issues and such and work out the kinks that everyone can see off the bat.
