**XFX 7970 DD Black Edition Malfunctioning!**

Hey all (my first post), I hope this is the proper place to discuss this but lately i had some issues. When i would play Black Ops 2 on maxed out settings, i would usually get 120+ fps (on a XL2420t monitor) but as of late, i would get 47 fps and soon after it would cause all 3 of my monitors to go black, and sometimes have grey vertical bars across the screens. If you could help me diagnose this issue, that'd be great!

By the way, i've tried memtest, and it doesn't seem like there are any problems with my memory as i ran it for 24 hrs. I've also updated to AMD Catalyst 13.1 Drivers, so i highly doubt it is a driver issue.

My System specs:
Maximus V Gene Motherboard
AMD 7970 DD BE Video card
8 GB Ripjaws X
Intel 3570k Overclocked to 4.5 GHz (Cooler: H60 configured in push pull config)
Topower 800w PSU
Adata 120 gb SSD
2 x WD 500 GB Storage Drives

Please any advice that i could try would be amazing!

Has it only been happening since you updated to 13.1? If so, either try the new 13.2 beta or roll back to what you were on before this started to happen.

It has been happening since 12.8, and right now its being RMA'd by XFX.
Apparently they can't find any issues with it yet... so i'm starting to wonder if it may be drivers or some other component in my PC.

Try uninstalling your drivers then use driver sweeping software to delete everything from the registry, etc.
Then reinstall 13.1 and see how it goes.

Alright, thanks for the advice.
out of curiosity, it couldn't be the monitors i'm using correct?
They are all new, and it doesn't seem to be faulty at all.

i think it may be 13.1 mate, i had no problems with mine, same card, until 13.1 now i get driver crashes

so i should rollback drivers then huh? Do you think the 13.2 beta would be any better? (not in terms of performance, but in terms of compatibility and crashes)

Thanks for the speedy replies!
As soon as XFX sends the card back (without any faults i hope) i'll try both solutions.

I get that grey bar problem with my 6870M card, i sent my laptop back and it still occurs so i think its an overheating problem.
They had replaced the mobo, the graphics chip and it still happens, so its either a heat problem or driver issue as it only really occurs at peak load or at random times.

i havent had a problem as of 12.11 beta 8 though but i will keep you informed if a recieve any more errors

Could be that PSU - only thing I've heard about them is that they apparently supplied OCZ with PSUs...

Alright thanks for all the advice, please let me know if there are any other problems with Catalyst 13.1 drivers.

Here are my 2 monitors (Tv is not shown in photo but is all black as well)

I've tried checking connections, everything is secured and i could still hear sound coming from my friends on Skype.

Thanks for the reply. I concur wholeheartedly, i hope XFX finds a problem with my GPU.

(I'm really debating whether or not to trust them again in the future if i decide to upgrade)

As soon as i get my GPU back i'll update them to 13.2.

its probably not their card. mine is a HD6870 mobile laptop graphics and i get it so it could be anything but after they replaced my graphics card it still happened :( it stopped after i cleaned the drivers and updated to 12.11 beta 8. i cannot run 12.10 it causes massive screen tear so i was on 12.8 for ages then 12.11

I've tried unplugging different monitors and it doesn't seem to be the issue. I've also tried updating the BIOS, and it doesn't make a difference.

I've got an e-mail from XFX and they said they haven't found any issues with the GPU, however they are going to replace the unit altogether. If this problem happens again, then i'll just disassemble it and run it via test bench.

Also, i'll roll-back the drivers to see if anything changes or run the catalyst 13.2 beta drivers.

Much thanks for all the replies in this thread! :)

My only suggestion would be to roll back your drivers to 12.6. I find 12.6 to be the most stable and problem free *touch wood* out of the lot including 13.1. My problem of similar description to yours (bar grey bars) was most evident with Skyrim but also clear on any benchmark test, woefully under-performed. GL with the RMA'D card ANewPaul :)

Everything seems to be working as usual! YAY!
It turns out it was the card because i'm using the same drivers (13.1) and no screen corruption comes up.

However, I got some line corruption on any of the screens, but its very intermittent.

I'll post pics later, but i'm thinking of a clean reset and just switch over from windows 7 - to windows 8. Any objections? I hear DX 11.1 benefits gamers to a particular extent, but not by much.

Thanks man! i tried rolling back to 12.10 and it hanged my system until i had to restore back to 13.1

I'll keep trying, but if anything weird comes up, i'm switching OS's or resetting OS

After extensive gaming, the issue still persists and the main screen corrupts.

I've been reading online, and people are saying it could be my ram, but i've tried mem test for 16 & 24 hr periods and nothing comes up.

Any suggestions? Currently running AMD Catalyst 13.1, (found too many problems in 13.2 beta 6)

It sounds to me like you're just not going to get it to do what you want it to. I bought a 7970 and went with AMD's recommended 3D solution (Tridef) and a monitor that was approved by AMD for 3D.

I had no end of issues and after about six months gave up and sold it and bought a GTX 670.

What was hilarious was that it was all AMD approved yet none of it worked together
