Xfx 7950

Recently got a "faulty" XFX 7950 off ebay with intent to fix for myself. Decided to test it first before taking it apart, so I put in in my rig, fired it up and it all seemed fine. One of the fans was barely spinning, but that's the main reason why it was "faulty". I was just downloading drivers and it was sitting at 60, which is probably fine with just one fan. Installed the drivers, restarted and then it happened. Got to the user select screen, selected my user and got some flickering, black screens and then a BSOD. Tried a couple times, still the same. After that I took it apart, cleaned it, changed the thermal paste, put it back together and now it won't even boot :( What the hell could have happened?

Try re-flashing the BIOS.

Follow the instructions on the R9 290 Unlock Guide in this link, it is the same method for all AMD cards not just 290s.

You will need to find out the model to get the right BIOS for it though.

You can get all the BIOS versions here
http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/...FX&model=HD+7950&interface=&memType=&memSize=

If it is a reference card any of the BIOS will work, if it is a non ref like the Double D you will need the Double D BIOS.

Have you gone over it with a magnifying glass to check all the solder points and caps for cracks, swelling or other signs of damage?

The thing that makes we wonder is that it worked fine UNTIL I installed the drivers.

Could possibly be a Ex-Mining card that's been pushed until death.

EDIT: Drivers mean the system uses the cards features properly, without drivers it's just a generic video output.

This is why I suggested trying to re-flash the BIOS, that problem can be caused by a faulty or wrong BIOS. It might be something else and the card may foobared all together, but re-flashing the BIOS "might" fix it :)

Hate to say it, but I think you've got exactly what you bought - a broken graphics card. If a bios flash doesn't fix it, that's pretty much the end of what a home repair can accomplish.

Well now I'm just wondering how should I flash it if I get no display. The PC turns on, the fan on the GPU spins at 100%, the led next to the pci slot shines red and nothing else.

Do you have another GPU?

Use that for the display, and then boot into the flashing tool from your USB stick and then flash the BIOS on the XFX card. Make sure you change the PCI-E lane in the BIOS flash tool to flash the right card though.

If you don't have another GPU then you won't be able to flash it.

with no drivers, the gpu clocks are lower and the vram amount is only like 32mb
With drivers installed the gpu can go into P0 performance state and all the vram will be usable.
Someone might of flashed a bios that is unstable for that gpu, you might want to try to flash a bios with lower clocks or higher voltage

If that fails it could be cracks on memory chips, so reflowing it in the oven might fix it

Ok so I've tried both methods, boot and windows, neither of them can see my 7950, just my primary card. The card powers up, fans spin at 100%, but it's not detected. Any thoughts?

Baked it twice, fixed the fan idle, but still doesn't work, so I guess that's that then. It was only 50 quid though, so it was a fun experiment :D
