There's a key difference between a bottleneck that's preventing the capability of another component to the extent that the game becomes a slideshow, but then there's the bottleneck that prevents you from getting 95fps rather than 70fps. One won't notice the difference between the two framerates but many would rather see the improvement anyway. That's fine in my books.

I dunno, I mean mobo improvements and processing within itself can add to all that, which is great. But I aint conceding 20+ fps to no1 :p

I'm personally happy to be sat in 304th place in hwbot's world vantage rankings for single gtx280, surrounded by extreme i7s with a heck of alot better memory modules and the like, and that's me just on air. They're circling the i7 wagons I'm sure.

3dmark06 ofc we'd take less notice of.

I'd be willing to take the pepsi challenge against any1's i7 with a gtx280 on air. Any game. Having said that I got a cpu that costs more than the regular i7 - but that's countered by the cheap-ass memory I got in it, and only 4g, dual channel.

I challenge you then to a single run of Vantage, with stock everything. Let's see who gets the best score (recks I could be beaten but it's all good:D) I have a GTX280 so the results would be very interesting.

Yup stock everything. :D I am still on air with my 280 atm too so the test will be fair. We running Physx enabled or disabled?

I agree there is no visual difference from 70 fps to 95 fps, but if you have paid for that I'm sure you want to know it's there.

The problem is that there is a bottleneck even on a single GPU setup. Although I haven't tried with a single GPU myself I have seen many others have increase in FPS with a core 2 even over 4 ghz.

Now you've made me wonder how much the improvement might be. I might borrow my friends GTX260 and give it a try in my old core 2 duo setup and pop it in my i7 rig to see how much of a performance increased can be achieved on the core i7 disableing 2 cores over a core 2 duo accross several games.

If I do end up doing this I'll be happy to report back. :D
