Would you upgrade?

I think the 285 was a 65-->55nm die shrink which cooled things slightly, then ruined by the clock increase.

ROFL yeah you just gotta love Nvidia's new drivers.

I sold my mate a 3870x2. He had a 9800GT already, wanted to run hybrid Physx.

Here is what happened when he used the newest drivers.

That's me on the speakerphone desperately trying to tell him that it does work with Mafia 2. LMAO. Look at the two and eight of it.

That's a great name for it. Still, at least we know the 3870x2 can handle large textures

Hahaha !

Thanks for all help chaps, I am going to order from SCAN tomorrow. Will go for MSI GTX460 HAWK, seems like the best one amongst 460's. Will be buying another one to run in SLi next month, and upgrade to

as soon as it will be available. Do you think I will get playable framerates (70+) in FULL HD in BF:BC2 and newer games? My other specs listed above, just quickly: C2Q9650 @ 3.6, 4GB DDR3 1600 8-8-8-24, Asus 790i Striker II NSE, Corsair 850W PSU. The 470's are now getting very close to 460's pricewise, but, according to few reviews the HAWK beats reference 470 with just tiny overclock.. And is shorter, quieter and cooler.

470 + another one next month or two HAWKS?

I play with Vsync forced OFF and really dont consider 30 fps "playable". On top of that, my new monitor will be 120Hz in Full HD, hence my requirements. I am not going 3D or anything like that, just cannot play any game with less than 60 fps, because it is just not smooth enough. Single player yes, but competitive multiplayer no. I dont want to be limited by graphics card, but hope my two HAWKs will be fine. Will let you know as soon as it will be all up and running

Then you must be Superman in disguise, as 99% of the human population can not distinguish anything above that.

That's why all movies are 30FPS and why it's always been said that if you can average 30 and not go below 25 you are sorted.

But hey, if you want or need the frame count to feel good then all power to you.

Recently I bought Split Second which is hard coded and locked to 30FPS and it flies along.

Edit. I should explain the 60FPS cap. Basically they do that because that is as fast as you need to go top end to assure a low end of 30FPS. If Vsync was off and you were shooting way higher and dipping (as you will) the game would go faster than it was intended to and then slower, meaning you would notice the jerkiness.

I know constant framerate of 30 without any dropping under or above would be the PERFECT situation, but.. I play with high sensitivity, and therefore I move in the game a lot. I would go, and within 1/4 of a second turn 360 degrees, just to check if there is noone behind me. I know it sounds weird, but this saved my life (virtual life, LOL) many times. If the framerate is lower than 60 (all tried in CS, CS:S, CoD 4, BF:BC2) I would have to move much slower than that, just to get everything appear on the screen. I also use my old CRT monitor for the important matches (sounding like a geek again

), just because it can handle 120Hz even in 1280x1024. So 100 fps is a MUST, although I can imagine playing the latest games with 60. As I said, playing Borderlands I didnt need anything higher than 30 fps and it was OKish, but once its online against real opponents, you dont want to lose because of your HW

Sounds like I dont have life, doesnt it?

Also, every time I forget to switch Vsync off (like a few days ago after re-installing nVidia drivers on brothers PC), the games just lag behind.. You move a mouse, and there is huge delay in the movement on the screen.. Its not like one second, but about 1/4 of a second, which is still AWFUL enough when you spray a gun and try to control your recoil with a mouse...

Well I was under the impression that when you played online it was all set to a certain FPS. It is in MW2 because it looks like bottom. That's a part of the reason I didn't play it.

I would strongly doubt that games would be fairer to those with more money and more expensive machines. The reason I went for 5770 Crossfire was not to gain any sort of advantage but because DX11 is a strain and drain and one card was right on the limit of comfort. Give it a new graphics engine ETC my card would have been outdated pretty quickly.

Ho hum. I suppose it would be rather boring quoting science as if that's what you believe then fair play.

That's exactly what it is. Faster rigs give you a better experience and an edge against the competition. Especially in something like a twitch shooter.

Also the 30 vs 60 fps debate. Your eye might not be able to see it, but at 30fps you get more dropped frames which your eye can definitely see. Also, movies use motion blur so part of the previous frame is included in the next frame. This makes the 30fps seem more fluid. A normal PC game at 30 fps doesn't use motion blur (some games do now) so it is much easier for the eye to pick this out. It doesn't seem as fluid as 60 fps.

In a twitch shooter like UT 30 is simply not enough. In something fast paced it's not just about what your eye can see, but how you move too.
