Latest spec replacement pc`s we`re being sent here, equip. with the E6400 etc...

Just went to put a dvdrw into it as a requirement... erm... no IDE ports >.<

Got a floppy port!!

They`re all coming in with SATA opticals only. These are regular desktops, nothing stripped down about them.

Not a big problem here, cept some1 will cry for a few days until an sata optical comes in, but an interesting move nonetheless.

yep mate i got a dvd SATA just payed lm 2 more that is bout 5 euors and it is great i hate those thick ide cables SATA FTW

think IDE?? :O i have some vantec yellow 45cm cables, looks the biz and much better than the standard red SATA cabling with motherboards....

LONG live IDE! :)

I am still using IDE for my boot drive!

I don't mind really, I haven't been bothered to upgrade because I have heard there is not much of a performance boost.

Will do one day!

I`ve just checked again, they have HP etched on them, but they could be made by possibly Foxconn, Intel chipsets. No major mobo labels are obvious other than HP.

Is kind of a strategic pita. Cos the basic pcs, as supplied, just come with DVD roms - now if a department wants a CDrw or DVDrw, they usually have to order it through their department - i.e. they pay for it, not the IT dept. When it comes down to replacing old pcs with new ones, of course the obvious theing is "we`ve already bought a DVD/CDrw.." but they have to buy a new one. Either way the department concerned has to eat it.

Pfft at the present moment in time, we`ve been asked to `kindly avoid the replacements that require them` - but long term they just have to come to terms with the fact that the pc supplier has come up with a nice way of getting more monies off them.

Of course the goods list of the suppliers does-not contain any pci ide cards, converters or similar. Quite clever really.

You can always get an IDE to SATA adapter I guess :)

I still have a IDE Dual Layer DVD-RW

Well, strictly speaking, pc hardware parts etc `need`/should go through the pc suppliers - it`s a contract thing, and as I`ve mentioned, they don`t supply them. But they about to supply optical sata devices, at a premium price I might add. (not the £15 u can get an IDE one for I can assure u)

Also the new drives do-not come with audio outputs, that seemed strange to me, although i`ve never seen the need for them myself.

Becasue the need for them pretty much has been lost since the 98 days. I remember having to explain to my dad that you didnt need them cause XP didnt require them lol and none of the new games did either. I like the SATA cables and how small they are but IDE is pretty much the same almost with a bigger cable. Until HDs themselves can take heed of the bus increase then theres really no difference. Thats why i still have 1 IDE HD and 1 IDE Dual Layer burner and 1 SATA HD.

Agree totally!

I see no need in buying sata drives when my IDE ones work fine.. When i next get a break down or have some spare cash I probaly will get SATA! :D

Well technicaly upgradeability is a need, but if you get a board that dosent have IDE you can always use a PCI bus card.

Meh, it`s all dependant on what u`r gonna do with the pc of course.

OS on an ide makes little difference, u`r heavy games or video editors or whatever will like a sata more.

I`m interested tho, what speeds do the sata opticals read/write ? I bet they`re still operating around 66.

.. and I seem to be the only person who h8s sata connectors.

According to w/e stuff i read (cant remember) and what people have been saying all HDs are limited to a max speed of 80mb/s becasue of the hardware. So your bus may be 1.5-3gb/s but your still limited to 80. So in turn, anything over ATA100 really isnt all that useful, but the headroom and serial connection over parallel is alot better. Not to mention, the tiny cable is so much easier to route than the big one.

EDIT: Oh wow, just did a test on my 1.5 SATA WD and burst speed was 117 but sustained was 58.6 See?

Actually I found that loading an OS from SATA 300 is far faster than from IDE

PP I dunno what you've been reading I really don't

I can`t see far faster myself.

Yeah, using DOpus (that gives speed for every file movement), it often produced around 25-30m ATA to SATA and about 45-50m SATA to SATA. SA2 goes to about 80 I think.

But over OS operations, there aren`t files that big to take advantage of it other than a pagefile. In normal operations.

I could re-Google but im actualy to lazy. If you think about it, it makes sense. Do a speed test on your drives and look at the sustained speed. Almost all about the same. At least, my ATA100, 133, and 150 drives are pretty much all the same.

My Ide drive has a 57.5 sustained speed and a 100ish burst! :D

Not sure wether that is good or not.

Like i said, pretty much the same speed all the way around. I have never owned, or played with a SATAII drive though so i cant speak on those.
