Wireless Router, Need Help

Hello All

I am just about to move house and will have 3 pc's around the house which all require internet access. I am a total noob to routers as i have never had one so i need some reccomendations and the equipment i would need. I have no wifi cards and i guess each pc will need one and does a wireless router have to be plugged into a pc or can it just be plugged directly into the phone line. I am on ADSL. Also the router needs to be easily configurable to open ports etc for downloading and pretty safe from hackers.

Thanks, Sam

I've had nothing but an awesome experience with my laptops and backup computers using the Linksys SRX setup. The speeds are incredibly fast and I get a full signal anywhere in the house whether it be 3rd floor or the basement.

Do these have to be plugged into a pc or just directly into a phone socket?

routers connect up to your adsl modem, youll have to get a router that's specifically for adsl connections

Stay away from Netgear wireless, as they have just lost a class action suit brought against them for claiming speeds on the box that their products just weren't delivering.

Most of the configuration software for routers these days use the familiar browser interface. If you want some info for port forwarding etc head over to Port Forward, some of it is a little dated but it gives you a fairly good idea of what to do.

Hi,

I have the BT Voyager 2110. This has a modem included so you don't need a seperate ADSL modem. You can probably pick it up for about £60. This is connected to the normal phone line through a ADSL filter. I then have an internal PCI wireless card in my PC (Edimax - cost about £10). I've never had a problem with this setup and it was very easy to install i.e. just plug and play more or less with a couple of settings e.g. username and password.

I actually have an XBox connected through a netwark cable into the router and also connect wireless to my Pocket PC.

NB I think if you know anybody with BT Broadband they can order the wireless router/modem for £10, so you could get them to get you one (not sure if this deal has ended but I know deal was on a couple of weeks ago).

I've not got on with that BT router/modem

Hi Kempez,

Have you sorted your problems out or did you get a different router.

I did read quite a few reviews before I bought it and it came out quite well.

Well I bought another wireless adaptor but the behaviour is very strange on it. The PC will connect and get web pages very fast at times then not at others.

I've scanned the PC for virus and trojans and nothing is coming up at all. Maybe I'll disable the hardware firewall, but not really had enough time to really look at it (its my brothers) :(

You could try connecting through a network cable (if thats possible) and see if the wireless part is the problem. Is yours a wireless dongle rather than an internal PCI card (I've had problems with those before)

Yeah but the idea is that the PC (though in the same room) is a wireless PC. I was gonna buy a LAN card but my bro don't want loadsa cables around.

I did have a PCI (cr@ppy one) which wouldn't connect to the router at all. I bought a new one (PCI - belkin 54g card) and this connects but is intermittant. I may possibly disable WEP to see if this is being a pain. Or maybe disable the hardware firewall. I'm not sure

No wireless product delivers the speed it has on the box.

Depending on how much of a challenge the house presents to a wireless signal you might want to look out for the new mimo routers which have a better range.

Conventional wisdom is also to stick with the same manufacturer for the various components wherever possible. You can often get a deal on a bundle.

Don't forget the all important security setup when you come to install it. Good luck!

I have seen bad reviews about lost of connection. I had a wired Netgear ADSL router and it was great I never had to restarted it.

Could you share any positive/negative feedback about Wireless Netgear ADSL routers, I am still tempted to buy Netgear.
