Windows XP Pro File Sharing Not Working....

For some reason my file sharing between my two P4 boxes isn't working....

My "server" box has 2 double port Intel NICs in it, one of the ports is used to go out to the internet router, then one port has a crossover cable and hooked to my current main rig. I have internet connection sharing and all that jazz setup and it works just fine getting the internet shared from the server box to my main box and any other computers I hook up to the server.

All of the computers are on the "WORKGROUP" workgroup, all of the computers are using XP Pro, File & Print sharing is turned on on both boxes, Windows Firewall has allowed access for file and print sharing on both boxes... However whenever I try and map a network drive or just even go to view the computers in the workgroup it doesn't pull anything up. When I manually try and connect to the server box from my main box in explorer it tells me it can not find a server with that name (P418HDDSERVER).

This is getting frustrating as hell because I have about 10gb of data on my main box that needs to be dumped on my server box ASAP as I am out of room on the single little 80gb HD in my main rig.....

Any help appreciated, thanks yall!

I should also add that my file sharing worked as of about a month or so ago, then just stopped working....

I can ping the server from the main box fine, using both the internal IP address and the computer name.

From the server box I can't ping the main box. Using the box name I get "could not find host" error. Using the internal IP address it actually finds it and then continues to ping a DIFFERENT address... and all of the ping attempts fail with a 100% loss.

Does that help?

When I ping 192.168.0.070 (the address of the main box), the server box tries to ping 192.168.0.056 ???

Try changing the workgroup on one PC to something different, saving, restarting then changing it back and restarting again, then try it on the other one.

It's also worth doing the same thing with file sharing.

Have you tried RDP to the server using the IP address?

Simple networking can be frustrating to setup at times. U can prat around with settings cables, pull ur hair out, bang ur head sometimes.... and a restart solves everything.

I was gonna suggest turning them firewalls off to see if anything works better.

Try something similar to this only used firewire to be the crossover bit. It worked until u restarted, which screwed it up, cos plain XP Pro didn't manage the nics in the way required.
