Windows Vista Upgrade Clean Install Workaround Found

Definately a cool workaround I just hate the idea of having to install Vista twice every time u go to format, what a PITA. I think I'd rather just fork out the cash for the full version and save the headache TBH.

its an upgrade, its only for the first time that u need to install twice, b/c it needs to boot from either windows XP, or ME to nullify the current os.

No, with XP it would ask for a previous version disk to verify that you had an older version, with this you basically trick the installer into thinking it is upgrading.

That`s what I thought until last.. sunday I think it was, I talked some1 thru reformatting her harddrive and got her to put her XP upgrade cd in and it carried on to install. The drive was totally wiped and it didn`t ask for anything.

It is the upgrade cd too cos I seen it.

Ah now, u might be onto something there.

She used the upgrade cd itself to firstly remove the partitions (there were 4) and create a new single one for the installation.

U reckoning it seen the WINDOWS folder on the c:\ and took it as the "old version" - and accepted it ? It came from an old emachine.

I can`t explain any other theory.

Same here, the only thing I can think of, it may also have been something in the master boot record. Either way good to know that it isn't as picky as Microsoft claim.

But I would rather a proper clean install, without any chance of corruption.

It`s a fair comment, which ever way u get `a` version of windows on u`r pc b4 using an upgrade I guess. As soon as u`r upgrade is in - u`r legit.

Used to be u could upgrade from win98, have absolutely no idea if u can win98->Visa.

Just to mention, this will not work for K-12 students. It says so on that page (though not obviously)
