Windows update problem

Something weird seems to happen with my automatic windows update!

First it seems that the windows update icon appears in my task bar everytime I start windows, not downloading anything though... It just appears for 2 or 3 sec and then disappears!

Second problem is when I log off from windows, occasionally I have an error message, telling me it is impossible to read or access memory (sorry forgot the address and reference) but it is for the file WUAUCL.EXE, which is the windows update tool too!

Oh and of course my windows is legit and genuine, running XP Pro SP2!

Any idea on what's going on, any help or advice welcomes!

TIA

Is it wuauclt.exe ?

Secondly, what anti virii are you using ?

3rdly if you turn Auto-Upd8s off does it still happen ?

Yes it is wuauclt.exe, forgot the "t" in my first post.

I am using AVG professional edition.

I will check with the autoupdate off and let you know...

with autoupdate off I don't see the icon showing up when windows starts and no memory error when I quit so far. Could the file be corrupted in some way?

I ran antivirus, spyware remover etc... and nothing bad came out of it!

[correction] I just got the memory read error on shutdown...!

Ok, I`ll assume that u`ve got up2d8 virus definitions for your virus/spy checkers, and to be general - the wuauclt.exe virus types are ~fairly~ old and should be picked up.

It is possible the file could be corrupted, but...

I`d get a copy of memtest and check the memory. Memory problems can leave you chasing your tail trying to find out whats wrong with your pc as memory pretty much effects everything.

llwyd has a nice collection of download links in a sticky in this forum-section.

Thanks, yes my antivirus is uptodate, I will give a run to memcheck and see what comes up...
