Windows Scan Disk "refused" to be launched

Hi guys, I hav an interesting small problem here. Everytime I want to scan my hard disk for errors, etc, and I tick the option to automatically fix errors, Windows needs to reboot and run it.

But everytime before scan disk starts checking, Windows will automatically cancel the process and continue to boot normally. I didn't press any key to cancel the process.

It happens also to any other software such as Partition Magic, which needs to reboot to resize or to create new partition.Windows always cancel the process before it is able to do anything. So, it's like something blocking the application to do its stuff.

Any suggestion on how to solve this?

this never hapened to me. what drive do you have? Are chipset drivers installed correctly and latest versions??

What OS are you using, Win 2K or before uses scandisk, XP ditched it for the even older chkdisk. If we know what OS you are using, it would be a little more helpful.

Are you trying to do a write test on a disk with the OS or application files that are currently being used. Simply answer YES and reboot the system and Scandisk will run in DOS mode...

If you want to do a Scandisk with just read only rights, you can uncheck both options and run it or you can type chkdsk without the /F switch at the DOS prompt...

Ehm I'm using XP Pro SP2. It's really funny because not only scan disk, even partition magic also could not finish it process of resizing or partitioning my drive.

I'll try to look at those links and hopefully one of them could solve this problem.

Also try this...

Do the normal steps to perform a disk check

When prompted, reboot your machine

During startup keep pressing F8 to bring up the startup menu

Select safe mode and see if scandisk runs then.

I'm thinking that there is something (an installed program or even virus) in your normal startup that is preventing applications from running.

low on space would mess this up...

maybe ur chksdk utility is faulty ??

a virus??

use ur Xp install CD go to recovery console and do the following (issue as commands in recovery console)

CHKDSK

FIXMBR

I'm thinking that there is something (an installed program or even virus) in your normal startup that is preventing applications from running.

I did as u told me and scan disk didn't work if i boot into safe mode. I think I agree that there is something that prevents scandisk or partition magic from running. Lemme try to disable all my startup apps.

run antivirus and anti spyware scans, bot preferably in safe mode

If all else fails you can try and reinstall windows over the top of your current install - just boot fromt he Windows XD, and choose the Repair option.

I tried from the recovery console and when I typed FIXMBR, there was a message saying that "Your partition is either nor-standard or has an invalid master boot record. etc...."

In the end it said that the drive could possibly inaccesible if I fix the MBR.

What does that mean and what should I do?

Backup all of your important stuff, which you should do on a regular basis anyway, and reformat. Perhaps your Partitioning utility has done something that Windows doesn't like, and it's giving you the finger

THE MBR IS INACESSABLE.. ok

Have you tired to install linux??

do you have a boot manager installed(eg the 1 with partition magic or lilo /grub)??

have you tried to convert your partitions format??

you may possibly have a corrupted hard disk,

You may possibly have a bootsector virus,

this did happen to me once its was when i tried to convert a freebsd partition to EXt2 using partition magic(my /home) ... it couldnt do it properly and i had to wipe the whole hard disk (complete low level format <<< not quick format but a byte by byte one>>>)
