Windows Modifications

Hi all,

Just been wondering what Mod's there are out there for Windows, i know you can change the start button orb but what other things can you do?? and what have you done to your windows installation??

I'm sure you can change the welcome screen, mac like taskbar, animated wallpaper, mac themes and other themes. Those are the ones I can remember on top of my head.

That sounds quite cool being able to make your Windows desktop look like a Mac.

Iv'e just had a look on Google and apparently you can change the Windows Shell?? i'm not quite sure what that is but searched it on YouTube, and it looks like that's what defines how the desktop and taskbar look am i right??

Is modding the Windows desktop as simple as re-directing the shell in the registry to a custom one you have created? i.e. replacing the explorer.exe with your custom .exe

Try the Windows 7 / 8 ( dependant on what your running ) Forum, they have a customisation section with loads of useful little tips and tricks.

Also looking at the relevant section on deviantart should give you a fair idea about the extent of modifications possible to customize the user interface of Windows.

And there are 3rd party tools like Rainmeter, where you are only limited by your coding skills at what you can do in terms of restructuring your GUI elements, and displaying information about your system more effectively.

I wasn't planning on spending anything but i will give it a look any way, maybe if i like it a lot i may through a bit of money at it if it's not to much and as you say would rather spend some money on upgrades instead
