Windows Media Player - slow, high CPU usage, won't convert files

Hi people, having a few problems here and no online source seems to have what I'm looking for :D

I have WMP on three different Windows XP Pro systems that are misbehaving. The symptoms include:

- Running really slow

- High CPU usage when playing some videos and music

- Periods of not responding (after clicking buttons) during high CPU usage

- Slow when trying to browse music library (I have a lot of songs, but still, it's tallied with the above issues)

I've tried replacing the system codecs, reinstalling different codec packs from online, and so far the video issue has for the large part cleared up. But my music library still misbehaves, and so does converting files!

The conversion is supposed to take place from MP3 (most of the library is MP3) to WMA for portable devices, however, upon clicking "start" the app will promptly hang on 0%, on the first file. I can still cancel it, yet it won't actually convert? Has anyone else had this strange, and annoying, problem?

The high CPU usage thing is a bit of a pain in the arse as well. I use iTunes as a default music player, but iTunes won't synchronize with my portable device as it is not an iPod. (though if anyone knows of a way of getting other MP3/WMA players to work with iTunes, I'd happily do that instead, heh)

Any suggestions?

on the WMP thing, just get windows media player classic, its ten times better ( i know its not really a solution lol) how much ram to you have?

I've got lots of music on my PC, and WMP used to lag badly opening the library. I changed to WinAmp, which manges large amounts of media very well, much better player.

HEY the problems u have listed above are all charachter traits of MS software a kinda Digital fingerprinting (good way to tell if some one stole ur code -- ITS WASTING MEM + CYCLES LIKE OUR SOFTWARE!) lol

how much music u got.....wmp srugles with high amounts as it doesnt cache it in a database aswell as itnues does

Well in iTunes it counts to about 74GB... so it's a lot (I like noise :D)

Thanks for the suggestions for other media players! I don't need WMP to play music though, for that I use iTunes :) I need WMP because I'm too lazy to manually copy n paste files onto my MP3 player, some drag n' drop and automatic conversion would be nice.
