well im trying to tidy up my room and repaint it, and replace my bed etc but i have worked out that a large part of my room is taken up by dvd cases for software and movies which was driving me  as to what to do with them until i worked out that i could just build a WHS and put them all on their and throw the dvds out saving space :)

only problem i have is i have never used WHS so dont really know what parts to use for it.

You don't really need anything special. Processor wise, you will be fine with a dual core (1155 i3 would be fine). There's nothing extra you need to know with regards to Windows Home Server if all you want to do is rip DVD's.

Low power CPU
Any compatibl mobo
4GB RAM
Any case
RAID card (if you want loads of space and higher data integrity)
However many hard drives you want of what capacity you want
:)
If you give me a budget and how much hard drive space you want I could throw something together for you.

i guess around the £700 to £900 pound mark maybe a little more if needed. well i want to use it to store and stream music, videos, photos etc so i guess the more storage the better it would be but could also always upgrade to more later on

Yeah as long as you have a compatible board you should be more than fine. You won't need much RAM, but seeing as it is quite cheap, 8 GB's will do. I'm thinking a 350 - 550W PSU should be enough for your needs and oh a low powered card like a 640.

Are you gonna be ripping your movies to iso or some other format ? would be a shame to lose all your bonus materiel on the dvd. Oh and dont throw the dvd's away, drop them into your local charity shop :)

awesome thanks for the info mate now just need to look into options for storage (Raid or non Raid setup). i just need to find a board, drives and a PSU then im good to go if i use the core2 duo
