Windows based server, opinions please.

You could always use unRAID. It is free if you use 3 disks or less. It will both become your file server and do its own type of storage mitigation negating the need for you to purchase a physical RAID card. Obviously you won't be able to use your Windows Server copy with unRAID.

An alternative to unRAID which would run under Windows Server is Flexraid. This actually in my opinion is the better option as it is cheaper and offers better features and of course it works on Windows Server meaning you can still make use of your Windows key from your friend and have an overall more useful server that you can run multiple things on. This too will not require you to purchase a RAID card as it uses its own proprietary software driven RAID mode called RAID-F.

@MadMarc - It's compatible with all versions as far as I know. The OP won't need to install it on the server OS as he will be streaming files from the server. It just makes it easier to manage movies and provides a nice interface for streaming :)

Thanks, I use plex to stream from the HTPC to the other computers and there you need to install a server programm on the server and plex media center on the other pcs or mobile devices. XBMC seems to be a better solution in combination with whs, I tried it once but because the htpc runs on win7 and not whs i didn't get it to work, i think i would have had to put all movies and music into windows media player and from there it would be streamed to the other pc with xbmc, anywhay I no use plax and it works very well so far

To be honest, stick with Plex. Plex is based on XBMC it does everything XBMC can + more.

And the Plex server isn't required at all, it (just like XBMC's server) is an optional extra which can help make your experience better by indexing your content on the server and then serving it to the Plex clients around your home.

In my honest opinion, Plex is a lot better, more polished and the Android/iOS apps are just fantastic.
