Windows 8 boots in 8 seconds..

But it might be a godsend for low powered devices like laptops, if this is going to be efficient on tablets then maybe they can make it super fast on laptops.

It might be, it might not - we'll see

I've been running it on my laptop since the developer's preview as come out. It definitely boots faster, 20 seconds on the regular 500GB laptop hard drive. It also seems less taxing on the computer, since my battery life has increased a bit since I've gone from Windows 7 to Windows 8. I'll give you an idea on what happens to frame rates, once I get an up to date Nvidia driver that doesn't be me a blue

screen of death. But with old drivers I'm getting similar frame rates to what I've had before.

Thanks for the info

Hmmmm, now would you say that this would be good for a gaming laptop? or just a netbook or something to that effect?

Gaming laptops usually have enough power, you'd see responsiveness and boot times get better probably. Nothing wrong with Windows 7 for gaming though

First thing I noticed about the 8s video is that the Elitebook doesn't boot like the regular model. I don't know what kind of Bios they have in it, but it takes more than 8s to get past posting normally. These models are in widespread use in the corporation now.

Secondly, I notice she didn't launch anything worthwhile. Any kind of App really, I mean it's one thing to display the UI for the panel feature, it's another thing to be up and running enough to run media player (for example) and for all the standard sheet to finish initializing. (and checking for updates etc as microsoft would recommend you have)

Thirdly, it would be nice to see a Win 7 build up against it (same configured hardware**). Booting up and launching something equally. Explorer or whatever. You can get old basic OS kernel to boot in seconds from a regular harddrive. An EFI type OS with networking for example.

Afaik, it IS Windows 7 with hooks in the kernel for the UI ??

Elitebooks are very nice btw.

I think the os developers can get away with a lot more stuff these days as the pc's are so powerful. Try running this stuff on a pc a few generations ago and it will cough and splutter. These guys just don't have to be as efficent with resources as they used to...

Probably why Apple can afford to keep deluging the market with new devices too

I don't think it will make a difference whether or not you are running windows 7 or windows 8 on a high spec laptop. The system requirements are lower, but a decent gaming laptop shouldn't even be remotely tied down by Windows 7, that the change wouldn't really affect anything. Having said that I wouldn't recommend this for gaming, because the windows icon, even when full screened still exists and if you ever need to move your mouse to the bottom left and you click, you'll bring up the tiles UI.

HuH O.O I may give this a go then.

I have to agree with anyone who thinks the UI sucks. What was Microsoft thinking with the whole start menu design? Sure its good for tablets but looks so freaking stupid on a desktop. We're not 5 years old... 500x500 icons in bright colors isn't necessary!

Seems like everything is headed towards touchy feely stuff. Imagine something like this on a big coffee table in the middle of a room - could be quite a lot of fun. I think that they are dumbing the interface down so it appeals to a wider customer base. It is definitely a more lean back consumption based interaction.

one of my mates already has a glass table with 30" touchscreen pc in it i think he will love this he likes windows 7 and widows 8 seems way more responsive to touch control...

[In the voice of Homer Simpson] mmmmm touchscreen.

Shame the touchscreen doesn't double as a photocopier.

I totally agree with SPS. I understand the "old" UI will still be an option on Winderz 8 for those that aren't touchie-feelie-screen users, so... maybe it'll be usable. With all the chatter I've seen floating around the web saying the PC gaming platform is dying, I wouldn't be surprised to see M$ finally ditch the mouse/KB interface for one of the flavors of upcoming OS's though. Plus, they'd then have some push towards their xbox platform. But, as I've said before.... you just can't move on a console, or aim on a console, like you can with a PC. And well, I decide what goes in my pc, not M$ or the other gaming neutering companies that make consoles.

The standard Windows 7 UI is part of the Windows 8 UI, at least it is for the developers preview. The tiles that you see are just your 'home' screen which you access by pressing windows keys or the windows logo. You would then click on the desktop tile, and you are back into windows 7.
