Windows 8.1 uses less space than 7?

QuietOne

always shouting
I installed 8.1 last night, after setting it up and moving my pagefile to my storage drive and disabling system restore and hibernation, I have 98GB out of 111GB remaining.

Same thing with Windows 7 and I have about 70GB remaining. I take it 8.1 has a lot less crap with it or Windows 7 had a lot of eye candy stuff.

Out of the box, Windows 7 and 8 both need 16GB (32 bit) or 20GB (64 bit), according to the Microsoft website. Pretty curious while your install only seems to use 13GB, assuming you're on 64 Bit :p

Yeah 64bit, I've disabled system restore, hibernation and swap file is on another drive

My Windows 7 install after updates etc... leaves 95GB on a 120GB after moving the page file and other bits *111GB* SSD, The same goes for 8.1.

I see, what version of Windows 7 do you have? I guess it makes sense, I have Windows 7 Ultimate so with Media Center and stuff it would take more space I guess.

Did you do the hibernation delete command ?

Open command prompt as admin and type the following and press enter but without the quotes - "powercfg -h off" and then reboot.

Just gets rid of any hibernation files and can save a butt load of space, I use it every time I do a fresh install after I disable hibernation as I never use that feature.

Yeah I do that too, frees up about 12GB of space

What about system restore ?
On windows 7 that can take up a large chunk of space.
That's another thing I turn off as I backup using Acronis True Image.

I disable that too on new installations and delete any existing restore points. Must be media center and other software that isn't needed.

Obviously people don't read the first post :P

I disable hibernation, system restore and move the swap file to another drive. One thing I never did with Windows 7 was remove media center and all the unused crap that comes with it. Ie the stuff Dicehunter mentioned.

Did you completely disable the page file/VM on your main drive or just create one on your secondary drive ?
As that's one of the only things I can think of, The media center stuff only gives you back about 500MB -

You never said virtual memory so i just through it out there. Don't recall Dicehunter mentioning it as well.
