Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit is taking up so much storage space

Hey, I am running a Corsair Nova 128gb SSD and at the moment only have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed on it (Google chrome and Adobe reader as well which only adds up to 0.7 of a GB so I am ignoring these for the moment) Now currently my windows is taking up 24.4gb of storage space.

I have been googling this type of thing for a fair amount of time and I more or less know what files are taking up a lot of space etc. the 24.4GB does include pagefile which is 5.9GB of space. I have also disabled Hibernate mode which gave me back a few gb, and I have disabled something else which people recommend but I cant remember the name of it.

Now I am currently monitoring my storage space with space sniffer and it is very useful. But I am wondering should windows actually be taking up 25GB even though I have things such as hibernate turned off as well as that other thing that I cant remember the name of?

all the files on space sniffer do add up more or less and here they are: Windows = 16.5GB, Program Files = 652MB, Program Files (x86) = 622MB, Users = 410MB and Pagefile = 5.9GB. So in total it's 24.08GB which is more or less there.

So the main question is how can I reduce the amount of space my OS is taking up on my SSD?

One question I have is can I move Pagefile to my storage drive without any problems or is it safer to keep it on my SSD? or should I just turn it off all together like some people suggest? (I have 6GB of Mushkin Ridgeback)

All advice welcome, as always. Thanks

1. Move your pagefile. I never disable it.

2. If you don't use hibernate, turn it off. From a command prompt type, "powercfg -h off" without the quotes, this will free up a few GB.

3. Turn off system restore.

Well on my HDD, Windows 7 x64 Home Premium, all installed programs and pre-installed applications and folders (i.e. everything excluding the C:\Users folder) takes up 34.5GB on disk, and I have say 20.5GB of that in the C:\Windows folder. So it shouldn't be too much of an issue at all with 128GB, because you have a lot of space for games and such left over...Unless you are running out of space?

You can delete old restore points and shadow copies of files, that would usually free up several GB if you haven't done it before.

Clearing the cache and such, especially for Chrome (C:\Users\X\AppData directory where you might find some wanted space taken up).

Old drivers can be kept in the Windows directory too.

I have a few hundred GB of other stuff in the User Directory, but your issue is the Windows part

did u have another os that u upgraded from or was it a fresh install?

It might be your old windows files if u did an upgrade.

if you have and you want to delete them then follow these steps, if not just ignore.

start

all programs

accessories

system tools

disk cleanup

select your drive u want cleaned(c)

click clean up system files and click ok

then tick the windows old files check box.

Click ok to delete files

Thanks very much for this, although It is a fresh install I still appreciate that you showed me this and it will no doubt come in handy perhaps in the near future

Have you heard of RTSe7enLite? LINK

It's a program that you can use which will create a install of Windows 7 but you can strip the things that are not needed or you don't need from it. I haven't used it myself so I can't advise you on how to use it I just know about it from reading about it on another forum.

The only thing is you would have to create a stripped down install then format and reinstall Windows using it.

I have used a similar tool to that for XP and Vista. You can rebuild the OS without all the added crap.

You could also check out Tiny Windows 7 tho I'm not sure if they are legit OS.
