Windows 7 or Windows 8.1

I run both on a daily basis and while both have their benefits I prefer 8.1 (well my version of it) as it has all the uncomplicated windows 7 goodness with the performance and reliability of 8.1. So basically windows 10.

Yes I think 8.1 is more reliable, I've had less issues with it. Heck, the only real reason I still have it is that I can't be bothered to update my old laptop or my AMD rig.
also need to check if Arma 2 works with 8.1

You going to try W10 when it hits ? I tried the preview and it's like 7 but with the performance improvements of 8.1 :)

Um, I don't know. I physically *hate* the window frame and button UI from 8/8.1 and from what I've seen, they've carried that over to 10.. I know it seems like a small thing but I just can't stand it, very childish. I guess I'm trying to wait-out this new GUI fad that is 'flat design' kiddy interfaces. Even google are doing it now, but their 'Apps' version seems okay, I wouldn't force it on desktop users like windows have though.. just doesn't feel right to me.

I'm with SuB on this one. Actually bought win 7 like a month ago. Paid top dollars for it. I have win 8 on my laptop with classic shell, but I stil don't like it.

I'd still buy windows 7 even now. I might stock up on a few OEM copies. we'll see

That's why you skin it, Takes 2 minutes to do and the visual difference from Windows 7 is nullified :)

Custom icons, Shortcut dock at the bottom, Original start menu etc... and now it looks exactly like my old Windows, The only time I've seen metro was when I first booted it up, Plus the colour scheme now matches my rigs dark clean look perfectly :)

is the a stock win 7 theme for it? not 'black osx' like yours then?

tbh last time i themed up a windows it was a pita so i've never really considered it.

Have you considered just getting a Mac Dice? your desktop very closely resembles one :P

Probably are but there's a lot to browse through, Try Megathemer or Virtual Customs, Both have a plethora of themes for W7 and W8.1 and some really talented artists :)

Me a mac ? ROFL, No sir, I would rather be waxed, Slapped on the ass, Called shirley and used as a surf board ^_^

I just like my desktop to be nice and clean looking :)

As in looks just like windows 7? Mine pretty much works like windows 7 to the point where I've not set any of the app crap that came with 8.1.

Feet firmly planted in the windows 7 camp here.

I'm not getting into an argument about it, but I will say anyone that says 8.1 is wrong :P You've been brainwashed, it's as simple as that.

(of course I jest, but I still stick to win 7)
here here win 7 every time

I have one aftermarket app installed, called Iobit Start 8. It lets you boot to the desktop, completely skipping Metro. You can disable the annoying Corners thing and it automatically hides the stock 8.1 'Start' button.

Personally, I like the square, fully coloured style of Windows 8 so I use the Start 8 'Default theme' setting, but you can also choose 'Classic Windows 7'. It also lets you choose out of a few buttons (and you can add your own) including the Windows 7 one.

So basically my computer behaves like a Windows 7 machine, but with the benefits of 8.1
No reason to get Windows 7 over 8 these days really.

If you can name one proper benefit to the metro interface, then you win the internet for the day.

How about that you pin most used application to the task bar, less used in to sections on metro.

I have chrome and my computer on the task bar then i open up metro to see all my office, games, utils and so all all grouped together and super easy to find.

keeps my desktop clear which I like and it takes less time to find what i want

start > all programs > find program folder in list > run program

is slower than

start > click tile.

sure I can pin stuff to the start menu in win 7 bur i can pin much much more on 81. and i group them by type,

Cant use win8/8.1 for benchmark purposes on HWbot,so im stuck with win7 there.
Its the RTC(real time clock) bug and win10 also have this error.

I find it quicker and easier to have everything empty and simply hit Ctrl+Q and search for the program. That way nothing is cluttered and I spend no time looking for what I need.
