Ok so on the 26th of November im buying and OS but im stuck figuring out which one to buy. I've heard a lot of good things about both operating systems and also a lot of bad things. I have had experience with both OSs but only for a few days. So I was wondering which one to buy. This would be a very important decision for me to make and I was wondering what you guys think. You guys on here have probably a lot more experience than I do so any help would be very helpful.

8.1 as you'll get a free upgrade to windows 10, which is fantastic. 8.1 is great with a few tweaks as well.

+1 for Windows 8.1, It feels a lot snappier and with tweaks you will never see the metro screen, I have had W7 and W8.1 duel booted and literally the only visual difference after tweaking was the boot logo :)

Genuinely I prefer 8 to 8.1, am I weird?

I don't understand the need to put the windows logo back  it doesn't do anything useful. I've developed a procedure now of smashing the windows key, typing what I want to do and then smashing the enter key. It works perfectly whether I am at University (weird 7), on my desktop (7) or on my laptop (until recently 8). Having the start button on 8.1 doesn't aid this process and all of the scaling of the login screen and metro apps seem screwed up compared with 8. I've yet to recognize any improvements apart from the fact it now has a power button.

I've no desire to mod any OS, especially not to imitate another one. I don't see a problem with Windows 7 and I intend to hoard as many licenses as possible.

Thats not all. With 8.1, you virtually don't have to see the metro interface anymore. You can boot to the desktop, and pressing Windows+Q brings up a search menu. I hate windows 8 because whenever you want to search for something, you have to go back into that damned metro interface...

I don't mod my OS normally, I literally just use 'Classic start Menu' (its a plugin)and it functions like Windows 7 but more stable.

I work with windows 7 daily. Its by far the most friendly to fix, which is good as it will break ever so often.

Whats wrong with metro, are you allergic to squares or something, it doesn't bother me even slightly. I don't see what difference booting to the desktop makes it's just one smash of the windows key away. I like metro, it lets you have a nice organised page of programs while leaving the desktop free to look at a pretty picture. Overall it's nice and clean and easy to navigate. Windows+Q does exactly the same thing as just typing while metro is open, it always did, just like typing while the start menu is out on 7.

I dont want an interface on my PC that wasn't even designed for a desktop. Windows+Q on windows 8.1 doesn't throw you into metro, it simply opens a search menu on the side of the screen. Everything about metro screams tablet. Come on, you have seen the settings menu...

I don't see it like that to be honest. In the past there were icons. Now there are still icons they are just surrounded by a colored square and arranged such that you can scroll through them. It's a logical progression and it appears more ordered than it ever has. How it was derived is not detrimental to its function as far as I can see, it's nice that things can be unified.

Unified? Half the setting menu opens in metro and the other half in desktop. What is unified about that? I find metro completely useless as I can be far more productive within the desktop.

Oh yes, wonderful. Now I can scroll down in order to have my applications scroll to the right.

If you can name one proper benefit to the metro interface, then you win the internet for the day.

+1 for 8.1, been using it since a week into the W8 release and have loved it, even without any of the 3rd party changes. It takes a bit of getting used too, but once you've haf a play for a few days, it's awesome. I can't wait for 10, from what I remember wasn't it going to be basically an update to 8.1 originally, rather than a standalone version, and that's why the update is going to be free ? There's a bit more too it but it's late, and I can't be arsed to type any more. lol

Like everyone else 8.1 to eventually get the free 10 which I'm currently using the preview of and it ain't bad like an amalgamation of 7 and 8 it's what 8 should have been all along

Feet firmly planted in the windows 7 camp here.

I'm not getting into an argument about it, but I will say anyone that says 8.1 is wrong :P You've been brainwashed, it's as simple as that.

(of course I jest, but I still stick to win 7)

You going to try W10 when it hits ? I tried the preview and it's like 7 but with the performance improvements of 8.1 :)

I'm with SuB on this one. Actually bought win 7 like a month ago. Paid top dollars for it. I have win 8 on my laptop with classic shell, but I stil don't like it.

Anyone know what will happen with win7 when 10 hits the markets? free upgrade also or do we have to take a trip to the store?

Windows 7 is being phased out by MS so you maybe able to get a free upgrade, A lot of places are not getting keys/copies back in stock, More focus on Windows 8.1 and getting people onto 10.
