Windows 7, 4095M graphics memory available (1.5G card)

Always seemed weird to me:

You'd have to argue 4096, or 4G. As shown in the nVidia settings.​

You look at the card's drivers:​

Memory Range F8000000 - F9FFFFFF

Memory Range D0000000 - D7FFFFFF

Memory Range D8000000 - DBFFFFFF

Memory Range A0000 - BFFFF

They're ranges, and odd numbers, so they'd have to be byte addresses.

Which doesn't show much. 224M ($E000000) for 3 banks and 128k for the last. The last I'm thinking is an old legacy necessity for boot.

Windows work in banks of 224M to talk back and for with the graphics cards ?

Anyone know anything in-depth about this ? Linkage would be good.
 
If your question is why 4G video-ram are available while your graphicscard has only 1,5G: The rest of the 4G are shared system memory, that means the gpu can use a part(in this case 2,5G) of your installed ram
 
That bit I've always assumed from what the driver tells us.

What I'm interested in, I think, is how and when it uses it. Pros and cons of allowing it, and, for example, does this mean you can effectively have a 4G graphic card, and as long as you have pretty damn quick memory, you're good to go.

I have a feeling it's not that simple.
 
It probably isn't that simple but I think using the system ram will bottleneck even high speed ram can't competit with vram
 
I've thought about that nasty word when thinking about how some high end laptop gpus that may still use system memory.

Need some tests. I don't think in this day'n'age ddr3, at the speeds it can achieve in a lot of systems, presents too much of a problem.

DDR400... well that could be another thing.
 
i have also been wondering the same thing recently....

perhaps its pre-render memory???

Strange one, the i5 660 (w/ 4g memory, 3.43 available as with Win 7 32bit it has to allocate addressing for all components within 4G) on this computer has allocated 260M (in 2 banks) in the drivers, the same 128k area too which has to be legacy.

Now this is Win7 32bit, unlike the 64bit above. According to the Intel Control Panel:

Maximum Graphics memory - 1563M, 1.5G if you like.

Looking back at the OP, the computer there, running 64bit, had 8G installed, so Windows can allocate whatever it likes.

I think that maybe it's like the system memory an the hard disk´s. when the system doesn´t have enough memory it reads more from the hard disk and bottlenecks, but in this case when the graphics card doesn´t have enough memory it "begs" a little bit of help from the system memory!........i don´t know....just speculating!!
