Windows 64 Bit and 4GB Ram

This post makes me want to get a free copy of 64bit XP Pro if drivers are running smoother nowadays as people are saying...I too have the 4x1gb config...registered as 3.25gb.

I would recommend getting vista (never thought i should hear myself saying that) since it supports directx10 (and thus, a lot of new games and programs which you can only play in vista) and the support is a lot better than xp 64bit. However, we all have our own opinion ;)

My school (Washington State University, Pullman, WA USA) offers Windows XP Pro 64bit edition as well as Windows Vista Business Ed for free, so I currently have a copy of both...I guess when it comes down to reinstalling windows I will only choose 64bit XP Pro over Vista if there aren't any games that require it at the time. I prefer to just stick with XP forever, or even Ubuntu if it had better game support...since I'm not a huge fan of this forced upgrade for some of the new games coming out.

only had it for a few months and its not all plain sailing, but when was any m/s o/s ?

I only changed as it was logical progression and for most it will be the same case-if it aint broke and still works why change?- of upgrade when appropiate or needed.

beware though when installing 64bit for the first time use 2gb's of ram until all udates hvebeen done my pc kept giving BSOD with 4gb

nope rams fine when I install the fix think its called kb97770 if not search google 4gb vista 64bit you will see this is very common in vista 64bit

however the fix is now in vista sp1

You do know it's possible to access 4GB of RAM with 32-bit Vista?

Just enable PAE and Vista should see the full 4GB.

Just pen an administrative command prompt and type the following: 'bcdedit /set pae forceenable', and then you just restart the computer. Viola. ;)

so confusing

yeha heard about this but isn't there more to this somethik like it can't reallybe used properly because at the end of the day 32 bit doesn't have enough address space or something

Yep, getting 32bit to see 4Gb is a lot different from actually using it. No software fix/hack will do it as it is hardwired into 32bit OSs.
