Will there ever be another OS?

Anyone think that some day there will be a brand new company that releases a completely new and innovative OS that decrowns both Windows, Mac OS, and all Nix distros?

It seems highly unlikely but this is what I want to see. We need more options, more GOOD options.

No I don't think there will be

Microsoft have just invested far too much in the industry to give anyone else a good shot

It would be nice if an openOS made it, but I doubt it

Bit like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted, u`r gonna be stuck with winOS and it`s future tat.

It's weak to think about in the long term of computers futures though really. Think 200 years from now, sure we'll all be six feet under then, but will MS still be ruling the computer software kingdom with overpriced crapware?

Google OS tbh

QFT!!! That's the one company that I could actually see taking out MS if they release an OS. Because A.) It's going to rock because Google made it :p B.) It will either be free or very very inexpensive and C.) It will have awesome support, again because Google pwns.

The chances are, in 200 years time, I can see pcs being in the same size boxes, using nuclear powered 10GW power supplies, x86 inherently - Intel 50x Core processors, heating the family home off them. .... . and a Windo$e Megalenium OS, that still doesn`t multitask with 50x cores. But nevermind, they`ll still be making money.

.. might have virtual-hologramatic monitors or something, that`d be kewl.

The only chance we`ve got is that if over 100 years time archeologists (?spelling?) uncover a CD/DVD with one of the great OSs of the 80/90s and uses a new machine to rebuild it and make it non platform specific etc... it gets installed and runs 1million times more efficiently than the then WinOS - and people stand around looking at each other saying "why aren`t we able to do this ?".

I'd certainly like to see an effort from Google, however the search engine market is a rocky one with once great search engines such as Lycos and Hotbot being driven into the ground. I really hope that the same thing doesn't happen to Google - but it might.

i once made the mistake of typing www.hotbod.com, no idea why, was just a typo while my dad was sat next to me......you can guess what came up lol. yea google would be great, i doubt it would be a heavyweight OS but i can see 3rd party developers having a field day with it since google aren't tight gits

I think Google has won the hearts of too many people for that to happen. But I obviously can't say that with any particular amount of certainty seeing as stranger things have happened in the past.

google phone number +1 (650) 253 0000

If google made an OS would it be as good as the google toolbar/desktop? :)

I thought the toolbar+desktop was spyware? :( would be as bad as windows is for spyware/rootkits and security :p

Memory is really bad about it, but in the 90s some time Lycos were speculated to be looking into the OS market. In terms of taking one over and running with it.

Abit even had an OS based on Linux...it lasted about 6 months :s

I dont see Google making an OS. Im pretty sure that M$ would find some sort of way of screwing it up, and Google dosent want that. Besides, Google is cool an all, but i wouldnt want to see Google Premium 2008 running my PC. Sounds kinda lame if you think about it lol. I know XP Pro isnt all that appealing either but at least it isnt gay sound haha.

Bearing that in mind, if they did step on their toes, I`d give their company a limited amount of life expectancy. U`d then lose u`r Google searching etc.

I don`t like Google tbh, nothing preducial, just don`t like it.

Yea, and even better considering they didnt sell out to the GOV like Yahoo did. Of course yall being over the big pond and all you dont have to worry about that.

Agreed.
