Hey guys

I'm currently getting some parts together to do a build log thing on here but im at a halt....the gtx lightning xe came out yesterday and it's only 10 dollars more but it's clocked down to 772mhz!...what the hell were they thinking? Any way can I sli it with my normal lightning? now I know that the xe has 3gb so I'm assuming ill put that in the first 16x slot and the normal lightning in the other. I plan to run either a 27 inch monitor or 2x 24 monitors at 1920 x1080

Cheers

You can run both but the faster card will be downclocked to the slower cards speed and the larger vram card will only use as much as the smaller card has.

So they would both run at 772Mhz and 1.5gb vram.

If your planning to run a tripple monitor or 3D setup in the future the extra vram will be most noticeable over a slightly higher clock speed.

If your not planning to run tripple screen or 3d then the 2x faster 1.5gb cards would probably be most beneficial.

Also the size of the monitors doesnt affect anything its all the resolution, 3x 21 inch 1080p screens are just as hard on the gpu as 3x 42 inch 1080p screens.

That doesn't sound right? MSI afterburner even lets you clock both cards individually? Maybe its just a Xfire thing but i can have 2 cards both at different clocks

@OP, Hunta is right about the memory though. The 3gb card will loose 1.5gb if you sli a 1.5gb card.

My lightning is clocked at 1050mhz right now so I guess it's best to get a normal lightning. I'm just worried that 1.5gb might not be enough for future games

It already isnt now. Metro 2033 is one of the few games that i have seen to use more than 1.5gb.

I like to play racing games such as dirt 3 and nfs hope it will be enough for the future games

Racing games are always easy to make visually amazing while using very little GPU. Example Gran Turismo 5 (Playstation 3) One of the most (if not the most) visually stunning racing game there is AND its ON A CONSOLE! So if a console can do it, your PC can.

sorry for hijacking your thread

but am i correct in thinking that if you SLI two 1gb cards you will still only get 1gb of vram?

Thanks, chris

You are correct. Also if you clock different clock cards in sli it goes at the lowest speed so use after burner to level out cards if you get stuck with that.

Really gran turismo looks awful I see all the time at work and just think hurry using AA to hide horrible low textures, But yer racing games are no metro 2033.

So even with the xe overclocked the same as my normal one I will only effectively only be using 1.5gb so there is no point in me getting a lightning xe

Gran Turismo is noted for have the best looking cars and most accurate out of any racing game out there. Also SOME of the tracks have horrible textures. But the premium cars are better than any racing game i have ever seen.

I would like to see another racing game that looks anywhere near that good.
