Wich HDD?

So after 4 years my 1TB OEM drive is finally dying, and ofcourse i need a new drive! This is for Movies, Games, well everything that doesn't get installed on my SSD. My main concern is silence, my current drive vibrates alot so I am looking at 5400 RPM drives, unless you guys think otherwise, so wich drive should i get?

If you have games installed to a 5400rpm drive then loading screens may be a little slow.
Agreed for data you can run 5400rpm drives as you dont need the load times, but with
games, you may be better off getting 7200rpm.
If the main concern is silence, I'd say a Western Digital Green drive as that will be about as
quiet as you can get. I personally fine most 3.5inch drives loud though - so I'd probably
suggest if you want the silence and the speed to get a 5400rpm 2.5inch drive as they
seem to be quieter than their bigger brothers but should give you a little more performance
than a standard one. Although I understand that this may not be an option.

I have caviar greens in my HTPC and a caviar black in my main rig. The green drives are very quiet and for for movies and music easily fast enough, I haven't tested them with any games though. The black is louder especially when it spins up (it's normally off whan I run stuff from my ssd) but not too loud.
So if you are running games of the hd I'd recommend a caviar black.

Yeah if you're playing games, might be worthwhile upgrading to a 7200 drive. Like the others say it all depends on how silent you want them. Although i never find hard drive noise annoying personally. I have a 1TB seagate barracuda

Probably going to get a WD Green then, the annoying thing about Steam is the fact that i cannot choose where to install my games!

Yeah man i definitely hate that! I wanted to install Skyrim on my SSD where it would benefit from the speed but no can do :(

somehow linus of ncix has his steam games on a portable drive. and now available to
load onto another PC by using the portable. simple 500GB USB porti-drive.
so it is doable to remote install steam games.

He is able to install the game from a different drive, but the game itself is going to be on the same HDD as Steam, AFAIK.

Yeh - I'm guessing he just has backup and restore on it?

He has the steam games installed on another drive, and when he wants to install the other games he just copy+pastes the files over to the mirror directory on the 2nd drive and steam will 'install' it.
